Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Soil microbial communities play a crucial role in maintaining soil health and fertility, making their composition a key factor in sustainable agriculture practices. The use of organic amendments, such as biochar and compost, has gained attention for their potential to enhance soil microbial diversity and activity. This study aimed to assess the impact of biochar and compost amendments on soil microbial community composition in an agricultural field setting. The research was conducted by collecting soil samples from plots treated with biochar, compost, a combination of both, and a control group with no amendments. High-throughput sequencing techniques were employed to analyze the microbial community composition in terms of diversity, abundance, and structure. Additionally, soil physicochemical properties were measured to understand the relationship between soil characteristics and microbial communities. The results revealed significant differences in microbial community composition between the treatments, indicating that biochar and compost amendments influenced the diversity and structure of soil microbial populations. Both biochar and compost treatments led to increased microbial diversity compared to the control group, with unique taxa enriched in each treatment. The combined biochar and compost treatment showed synergistic effects on microbial community composition, suggesting a potential for enhanced soil health benefits. Furthermore, the study identified specific microbial taxa that were positively or negatively associated with soil properties such as pH, organic matter content, and nutrient availability. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms by which biochar and compost amendments influence soil microbial communities and highlight the potential for targeted management practices to promote beneficial microbial populations. In conclusion, this research contributes to our understanding of the interactions between soil microbial communities and organic amendments, specifically biochar and compost. The results emphasize the importance of considering soil microbial diversity in agricultural management strategies aimed at improving soil health and sustainability. Future research directions could focus on long-term effects of biochar and compost applications on soil microbial communities and ecosystem functions, providing valuable information for advancing sustainable agriculture practices.
