Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis presents an in-depth investigation into the assessment of soil health and carbon sequestration potential in agroforestry systems. Agroforestry, as an integrated land use management approach that combines trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock, has gained recognition for its potential to enhance soil health and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration. The research conducted in this study focuses on evaluating the soil health indicators and carbon sequestration potential of agroforestry systems, with a specific emphasis on understanding the interactions between tree-crop systems and their impact on soil properties and carbon storage. The study begins with a comprehensive review of the existing literature on agroforestry systems, soil health assessment methods, and carbon sequestration mechanisms. This literature review highlights the importance of agroforestry in promoting sustainable land management practices and its role in enhancing soil fertility and ecosystem services. The review also identifies gaps in current knowledge, emphasizing the need for empirical research to quantify the effects of agroforestry on soil health and carbon sequestration. The research methodology employed in this study includes field assessments and laboratory analyses to measure key soil health indicators such as soil organic matter content, nutrient levels, microbial activity, and physical properties. Carbon sequestration potential is assessed through soil sampling and analysis to quantify carbon stocks in agroforestry systems. Data collection is conducted in agroforestry plots established in different agroecological zones to capture the variability in soil health and carbon sequestration across different environmental conditions. The findings of this study reveal significant differences in soil health indicators and carbon sequestration potential between agroforestry systems and conventional agriculture practices. Agroforestry systems demonstrate higher levels of soil organic matter, improved nutrient cycling, and enhanced microbial diversity compared to monoculture systems. Carbon sequestration assessments indicate that agroforestry systems have the potential to sequester substantial amounts of carbon in both aboveground biomass and soil organic matter, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. The discussion section of this thesis critically analyzes the implications of the research findings for sustainable land management and climate change adaptation. The results underscore the importance of promoting agroforestry systems as a viable strategy for improving soil health, enhancing carbon sequestration, and building resilient agroecosystems. The study also highlights the need for policy support and incentives to encourage the adoption of agroforestry practices among farmers and land managers. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the assessment of soil health and carbon sequestration potential in agroforestry systems. The research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the benefits of agroforestry for sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. The findings emphasize the potential of agroforestry systems to enhance soil fertility, biodiversity, and carbon storage, making them a promising approach for achieving both environmental and agricultural sustainability goals.
