Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria has become a growing concern due to its detrimental effects on academic performance, mental health, and societal well-being. This research project aims to investigate the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug abuse among university students in Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach will be employed to gather data, combining both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The study will first assess the extent of drug abuse among undergraduates in different universities across Nigeria. Quantitative surveys will be administered to gather information on the types of drugs commonly abused, frequency of use, reasons for drug abuse, and factors influencing drug use among students. The data collected will be analyzed to identify trends and patterns in drug abuse behavior among university undergraduates. Furthermore, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of students identified as drug users to delve deeper into their experiences, motivations, and the impact of drug abuse on their academic performance and personal lives. These interviews will provide valuable insights into the underlying reasons for drug abuse among university students, shedding light on the social, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to this phenomenon. The research will also investigate the consequences of drug abuse on the academic performance of university undergraduates. By comparing the academic records of drug users and non-users, the study aims to determine the correlation between drug abuse and academic achievement. Additionally, the research will explore the mental health implications of drug abuse, including its effects on emotional well-being, stress levels, and overall mental health among university students. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the prevalence and impact of drug abuse among university undergraduates in Nigeria. The results will have implications for policy development, intervention strategies, and targeted educational programs to address drug abuse among students. By raising awareness of the risks associated with drug abuse and promoting preventive measures, this research aims to mitigate the negative effects of substance misuse on the academic success and well-being of university students in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This research work is on the effects of Drug Abuse among University undergraduates in Nigeria. It appears that not only the use of drugs that create problems but rather their misuse. In other words the widespread use of drugs has not only turned our attention to the dynamics of drug use and its determinants but also made it necessary to weigh the impact of this process on social institutions and social charge in future generations.
Drug abuse according to Laver (1978) simply means the improper use of drugs to the degree that the consequences are defined as detrimental to the user and or the society. The World Health Organization (WHO
(2006) also defined drug abuse as a “state” of periodic or chronic intoxication, detrimental to the individual and to the society, produced by the repeated consumption of a drug (natural or synthetic).
Drug abuse patterns include all aspect of drug usage by the youths ranging from how much, how often and what sort of drugs, where who, with, what circumstances and so on.
