Thesis Abstract

Effective procurement processes are vital for maintaining competitiveness and operational efficiency in manufacturing firms, yet many organizations continue to face challenges related to supplier management that hinder their procurement performance. Despite the recognized importance of supplier relationship management (SRM), empirical evidence on its specific impact on procurement efficiency remains limited, particularly within the manufacturing sector. This study aims to investigate the influence of SRM practices on procurement efficiency in manufacturing firms, seeking to identify the key relational factors that contribute to operational improvements and cost savings. The specific objectives include evaluating the current state of SRM implementation, measuring procurement efficiency through metrics such as cycle time, cost reduction, and quality improvement, and analyzing the relationship between SRM variables and procurement performance outcomes. The research adopts a descriptive correlational design grounded in a positivist paradigm to explore the association between SRM practices and procurement efficiency. The target population comprises procurement managers and supply chain professionals from 250 manufacturing firms operating within the region, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representation across firm sizes and subsectors. A structured questionnaire, developed based on established SRM frameworks and procurement performance indicators, serves as the primary data collection instrument. This instrument was subjected to validity testing through expert review and pilot testing, ensuring content relevance and construct validity, while internal consistency reliability was confirmed with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.8. Quantitative data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to profile SRM practices and procurement performance, followed by inferential analysis using multiple regression analysis to test the hypothesized relationships between SRM practices—including communication, trust, collaboration, and shared goals—and procurement efficiency metrics. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the mediating effects of relationship quality on procurement outcomes, while also assessing model fit indices for robustness. It is anticipated that the findings will demonstrate a statistically significant positive association between strategic SRM practices and procurement efficiency, with trust and collaboration emerging as critical mediators in enhancing procurement cycle times, reducing costs, and improving supplier quality. The study expects to identify gaps in SRM implementation, especially in smaller firms or those with limited formalized supplier development programs, thus providing actionable insights for managerial practices. This research contributes to existing knowledge by empirically validating the impact of SRM on procurement performance within the manufacturing context, applying and extending theories such as Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) and the Relationship Life Cycle theory. It enriches the scholarly discourse on relational exchanges and operational efficiency, offering a comprehensive model that links SRM practices directly to measurable procurement outcomes. Based on the findings, the study recommends that manufacturing firms adopt a strategic approach to SRM, emphasizing trust building, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. It advocates for the development of formal SRM policies and continuous relationship assessment to enhance procurement efficiency and sustain competitive advantage. The study also suggests avenues for future research, including longitudinal designs to establish causal relationships and qualitative inquiries to explore contextual nuances influencing SRM efficacy in diverse manufacturing environments.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how managing relationships with suppliers influences the efficiency of procurement processes in manufacturing companies. Procurement efficiency refers to how smoothly and cost-effectively a company can acquire the materials and components it needs to operate. Effective supplier relationship management (SRM) involves building strong, cooperative, and trustworthy partnerships with suppliers, which can lead to better communication, reliability, and quality of supplies. The study examines whether and how these positive relationships improve procurement outcomes, such as reducing costs, lead times, and disruptions. This topic matters because manufacturing firms depend heavily on their suppliers, and ineffective supplier relationships can cause delays, increase costs, and reduce competitiveness. While many companies recognize the importance of SRM, there is limited detailed research on the direct impact it has on procurement efficiency specifically within manufacturing settings. This study aims to fill that gap by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between SRM practices and procurement performance. The researcher will start by reviewing relevant literature to identify key SRM practices and procurement metrics. They will then develop a structured questionnaire to collect data from a sample of approximately 150 procurement managers in manufacturing firms. Data will be collected via surveys and analyzed using multiple regression analysis to determine the strength and nature of the relationship between SRM and procurement efficiency. The study may also incorporate thematic analysis of open-ended responses to gain deeper insights. The main contribution of the research is providing practical evidence for manufacturing firms on the importance of SRM and offering actionable recommendations on how to improve supplier relationships for better procurement outcomes. The expected outcome is that stronger SRM will be associated with higher procurement efficiency, leading firms to prioritize relationship management as a strategic tool. The findings will help managers understand which SRM practices yield the best results and inform policy and operational improvements.
