Abstract
This thesis explores the impact of virtual reality therapy on pain management in pediatric patients. Pain management is a critical aspect of pediatric healthcare, and traditional methods, such as pharmacological interventions, have limitations and potential side effects. Virtual reality therapy has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for pain management in various patient populations, including pediatric patients. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy in reducing pain perception and improving overall pain management outcomes in pediatric patients. The research will be conducted using a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative assessments of pain levels and qualitative analysis of patient experiences with virtual reality therapy. A sample of pediatric patients experiencing acute or chronic pain will be recruited from a pediatric healthcare facility for participation in the study. The patients will undergo virtual reality therapy sessions using immersive virtual reality environments designed to distract and engage them during painful procedures or episodes. The study will consist of three main phases pre-intervention assessment, virtual reality therapy sessions, and post-intervention evaluation. Quantitative data will be collected using standardized pain assessment scales before, during, and after the virtual reality therapy sessions. Qualitative data will be gathered through interviews with the pediatric patients to explore their perceptions, experiences, and satisfaction with virtual reality therapy as a pain management intervention. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of virtual reality therapy in pediatric pain management. The results will provide insights into the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy in reducing pain intensity, improving pain coping mechanisms, and enhancing overall patient experience during painful procedures. The study aims to bridge the gap in existing research by focusing specifically on pediatric patients and exploring the unique challenges and opportunities associated with using virtual reality therapy in this population. Overall, this thesis aims to advance our understanding of the role of virtual reality therapy in pediatric pain management and its potential benefits for enhancing the quality of care and improving outcomes for pediatric patients. The findings will have implications for healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers seeking innovative approaches to pain management in pediatric healthcare settings.
