Thesis Abstract
Inadequate nutritional status among children remains a critical public health concern, particularly in developing regions where disparities between urban and rural communities persist. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of the nutritional status of pediatric populations in urban and rural settings, with a focus on identifying socio-economic, environmental, and behavioral determinants influencing nutritional outcomes. The specific objectives are to assess and compare the prevalence of undernutrition and overnutrition among children aged 6 months to 12 years in selected urban and rural localities, explore socio-demographic and household factors associated with nutritional status, evaluate dietary patterns and physical activity levels, and determine the extent to which existing health and nutrition policies impact these populations. Employing a cross-sectional research design grounded in the socio-ecological model of health behavior, the study sampled a total of 1,200 children from 20 different communities—600 from urban areas and 600 from rural communities—using multistage sampling techniques to ensure representativeness. Data collection involved structured questionnaires administered to caregivers, anthropometric measurements (height, weight, mid-upper arm circumference), and dietary intake assessments through 24-hour dietary recalls and food frequency questionnaires.
