Thesis Abstract

Within the demanding environment of healthcare provision, nursing staff encounter chronic occupational stress which adversely affects their mental, emotional, and physical well-being, thereby compromising both employee health and patient care outcomes. This study aims to empirically assess the impact of a structured Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on the well-being of nursing personnel engaged in acute care settings. The specific objectives are to evaluate changes in stress levels, emotional resilience, and job satisfaction among nurses following participation in MBSR, and to explore their perceptions regarding the intervention’s effectiveness in alleviating occupational stress. This research adopts a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative pretest-posttest control group measures with qualitative interviews. The population comprises registered nurses working in high-acuity units within urban hospitals. A sample of 120 participants was randomly assigned to intervention (n=60) and control groups (n=60). The intervention group underwent an eight-week MBSR training program, consisting of weekly group sessions and daily mindfulness exercises, while the control group received no intervention. Data collection instruments included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). Qualitative insights are anticipated to reveal themes of increased self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, and greater perceived control over occupational stressors. These findings will substantiate the hypothesis that mindfulness training offers a viable psychosocial intervention to enhance nurse well-being in high-pressure clinical environments. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing robust empirical evidence on the efficacy of MBSR tailored to nursing populations, addressing gaps concerning long-term psychological benefits and contextual relevance within acute care settings. It extends theoretical frameworks by illustrating mechanisms through which mindfulness modifies stress perceptions and professional satisfaction among health workers. Based on the results, it is recommended that healthcare institutions integrate structured mindfulness programs into their staff support initiatives to foster resilience and reduce burnout. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of mindfulness interventions across diverse healthcare contexts and investigate cost-effectiveness analyses to inform policy implementation. Overall, this research underscores the potential of mindfulness-based interventions as an effective strategy for promoting sustainable nurse well-being, with implications for organizational policy and quality of care improvements in healthcare systems.
