This study investigates the differential impacts of indigenous and Western musical structures on cognitive processing to better understand how cultural frameworks shape auditory perception and cognitive engagement with music. In an era marked by increasing globalization and cultural exchange, understanding the cognitive underpinnings of diverse musical systems is essential for advancing ethnomusicology, cognitive psychology, and cross-cultural neuroscience. The primary aim of the research is to compare the cognitive effects elicited by indigenous music, characterized by modal scales, rhythmic complexity, and contextual improvisation, with those produced by Western tonal music, distinguished by harmony, fixed scales, and structured compositions. The study further seeks to elucidate how these structural differences influence memory, attention, and emotional response in listeners across cultural backgrounds. To achieve these objectives, a mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating quantitative experimental procedures with qualitative thematic analysis. The population consisted of 200 participants, stratified into two cultural groups 100 individuals with indigenous musical backgrounds from rural communities in Nigeria and 100 Western-trained individuals from urban centers in the United States. Purposive sampling was used to select participants with demonstrated musical familiarity and listening experience in their respective traditions. Data collection involved the use of structured auditory stimuli, consisting of representative indigenous and Western musical excerpts, validated for cultural authenticity by ethnomusicologists. Cognitive responses were measured through a series of tasks—including recognition tests, reaction time assessments, and emotional self-report questionnaires—administered using computerized interfaces. Data analysis was conducted through a combination of inferential statistics and qualitative coding. These results will contribute to the growing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on how musical structure influences cognitive processing differently across cultures, emphasizing the importance of cultural context in auditory perception theories. The research concludes that integrating indigenous musical paradigms into cognitive models enriches understanding of cross-cultural auditory processing and highlights the need for culturally sensitive approaches in cognitive neuroscience and music education. Recommendations include the application of the findings in developing culturally adapted music therapy interventions, curriculum design that acknowledges cognitive-cultural diversity, and further investigations into neurophysiological correlates of musical processing using neuroimaging techniques. Overall, this study offers a significant contribution to ethnomusicological and cognitive research by bridging cultural musical structures with psychological frameworks, advancing theoretical models of music cognition across diverse cultural landscapes.
