Thesis Abstract
Abstract
The impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on accounting practice in Nigeria has become a significant area of interest, given the rapid advancements in technology globally. This research aims to explore how ICT has influenced accounting practices in Nigeria, focusing on the benefits and challenges faced by accounting professionals in adopting and integrating these technologies into their work processes. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Through interviews, surveys, and observations, the research assesses the extent to which ICT has been incorporated into accounting practices in Nigeria, as well as the implications for the profession and the overall business environment. Preliminary findings suggest that the adoption of ICT in accounting has led to increased efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness in financial reporting and analysis. The use of accounting software, electronic spreadsheets, and cloud-based systems has streamlined processes, reduced manual errors, and improved decision-making capabilities for accounting professionals. Additionally, ICT has facilitated remote work capabilities, enabling professionals to work from anywhere and collaborate in real-time with colleagues and clients. Despite these benefits, the research also identifies several challenges associated with the integration of ICT into accounting practices in Nigeria. These challenges include issues related to data security and privacy, the need for continuous training and upskilling of accounting professionals to keep up with technological advancements, as well as potential resistance to change within traditional accounting firms. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the impact of ICT on accounting practice in Nigeria. By understanding the benefits and challenges associated with the adoption of technology in the accounting profession, stakeholders can make informed decisions about the integration of ICT into their practices to enhance efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in the digital age. The findings from this study have implications for policymakers, accounting professionals, educators, and organizations aiming to leverage technology for improved financial management and reporting practices.
