Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Libraries in Nigeria play a crucial role in providing access to information and knowledge for the public. However, sustaining these institutions financially remains a challenge. This comparative study aims to explore the different ways in which Nigerian libraries generate income to support their operations. The research will focus on various types of libraries, including academic, public, school, and special libraries, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the income-generating strategies employed across different sectors. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys distributed to library administrators to gather information on budget allocations, revenue sources, and expenditure patterns. Qualitative interviews will be conducted with key stakeholders, including librarians, government officials, and funding agencies, to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with income generation in libraries. The research will analyze the effectiveness of different income-generating activities, such as user fees, grants, donations, and partnerships with external organizations. By comparing the financial sustainability of libraries across sectors, the study aims to identify best practices and innovative strategies that can be adopted to enhance revenue generation in Nigerian libraries. Additionally, the research will explore the impact of government policies and funding mechanisms on the financial stability of libraries, as well as the role of community engagement in supporting library services. Overall, this comparative study seeks to contribute to the existing literature on library management and financial sustainability in Nigeria. By examining the diverse approaches to income generation in libraries, the research aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, library administrators, and other stakeholders seeking to improve the financial viability of libraries in the country. The findings of this study are expected to inform future initiatives aimed at strengthening the financial infrastructure of Nigerian libraries and ensuring the continued availability of information resources for the public.
