Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) plays a crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria. Nigeria, as a member state of UNESCO, has benefitted from various programs and initiatives aimed at advancing human rights within the country. This research explores the specific ways in which UNESCO contributes to the protection of human rights in Nigeria. UNESCO's work in Nigeria focuses on education, science, culture, and communication, all of which are essential components of human rights protection. By promoting access to quality education, UNESCO helps to empower individuals with knowledge and skills to exercise their rights effectively. Moreover, UNESCO's efforts in advancing scientific research and cultural preservation contribute to creating a society that values diversity and respects the rights of all individuals. In Nigeria, UNESCO has been actively involved in promoting freedom of expression and access to information, which are fundamental human rights. Through capacity-building initiatives and advocacy campaigns, UNESCO supports efforts to strengthen media freedom and promote transparency in governance. By working closely with local partners and government agencies, UNESCO helps to create an enabling environment for the protection of human rights in Nigeria. Furthermore, UNESCO plays a critical role in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls in Nigeria. Through its various programs, UNESCO works to eliminate gender disparities in education, promote women's participation in decision-making processes, and combat gender-based violence. By advocating for the rights of women and girls, UNESCO contributes to building a more inclusive and equitable society in Nigeria. In conclusion, UNESCO's presence in Nigeria has been instrumental in promoting human rights and fostering a culture of respect for diversity and equality. By focusing on education, science, culture, and communication, UNESCO addresses key aspects of human rights protection and contributes to the overall development of the country. Moving forward, continued collaboration between UNESCO and Nigeria is essential to further advance human rights and ensure the well-being of all individuals within the country.
