Abstract
The period of military rule in Nigeria, especially under the regime of General Sani Abacha from 1993 to 1998, is a critical period in the country's political history. This research project aims to provide an in-depth appraisal of the Abacha regime and its impact on the political transition in Nigeria. By analyzing the policies, governance style, and socio-political dynamics of the Abacha era, this study seeks to uncover the complexities and challenges faced by the country during this period. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, official documents, and historical accounts, this research project examines the key events and decisions that characterized Abacha's rule and their implications for Nigeria's political landscape. The study also explores the strategies employed by the military government to maintain power and control during a time of both domestic and international scrutiny. Furthermore, this research project investigates the role of the military in shaping the political transition process in Nigeria and the extent to which the Abacha regime influenced the subsequent democratic dispensation.
