Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project focuses on the production of mosquito repellent insecticides in the form of mosquito coils using orange peels (Cestrum) as the main industrial ingredient. Mosquitoes are vectors of deadly diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus, causing significant health concerns globally. The use of synthetic insecticides for mosquito control has raised environmental and health issues, emphasizing the need for natural and eco-friendly alternatives. Orange peels have been identified as a potential source of natural compounds with insecticidal properties due to their high content of essential oils, particularly limonene. The research methodology involves the extraction of essential oils from orange peels through various techniques such as steam distillation and solvent extraction. The extracted oils are then formulated into mosquito coils using binders and other additives to enhance their efficacy and longevity. The performance of the orange peel-based mosquito coils is evaluated in terms of their repellent effect, knockdown rate, and residual activity against mosquitoes. The findings of this study highlight the potential of orange peel-derived mosquito coils as effective and eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic insecticides. The repellent properties of the orange peel compounds can help in reducing mosquito-borne diseases and minimizing the environmental impact associated with chemical insecticides. The use of natural ingredients like orange peels not only offers a sustainable solution for mosquito control but also provides additional value by utilizing agricultural waste products. Overall, the production of mosquito repellent insecticides using orange peels presents a promising avenue for sustainable pest management strategies. Further research and development in this area could lead to the commercialization of eco-friendly mosquito control products with broader applications in public health and agriculture. By harnessing the natural insecticidal properties of orange peels, we can contribute to a safer and more sustainable approach to combating mosquito-related health risks while promoting the utilization of bio-based resources in industrial applications.
