Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Phytomedicine, also known as herbal medicine, has been an integral part of healthcare practices in Nigeria for centuries. The rich biodiversity of Nigeria has provided a vast array of medicinal plants that have been traditionally used for various health conditions. The aim of this research is to appraise the current status of phytomedicine in Nigeria, focusing on its utilization, challenges, and potential for integration into the modern healthcare system. This study involves a comprehensive review of existing literature on the use of phytomedicine in Nigeria. Various databases were searched to identify relevant studies, reports, and articles on traditional medicinal plants in Nigeria. The findings reveal that phytomedicine plays a significant role in the healthcare system of Nigeria, with a large percentage of the population relying on traditional remedies for primary healthcare needs. Despite its widespread use, phytomedicine in Nigeria faces several challenges that hinder its full integration into the modern healthcare system. These challenges include issues related to standardization, quality control, safety, and efficacy of herbal products. Regulatory frameworks for the registration and certification of phytomedicine are also lacking, leading to concerns about the authenticity and purity of herbal remedies. To address these challenges, there is a need for increased research and documentation of traditional medicinal plants in Nigeria. This will help in identifying the active compounds present in these plants, as well as their pharmacological properties and potential interactions with conventional medicines. Collaboration between traditional healers, scientists, and healthcare providers is essential to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine. Furthermore, capacity building and training programs for traditional healers can help improve their knowledge and skills in the use of medicinal plants. Public awareness campaigns are also necessary to educate the population about the benefits and risks of phytomedicine, promoting safe and responsible use of herbal remedies. In conclusion, phytomedicine has a long-standing tradition in Nigeria and continues to be an important aspect of healthcare delivery in the country. By addressing the challenges and harnessing the potential of traditional medicinal plants, Nigeria can benefit from the integration of phytomedicine into its modern healthcare system, providing safe, effective, and affordable healthcare options for its population.
