The challenges of teaching home economics in nigerian schools and colleges (a case study of owerri north local government area)

Thesis Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the challenges of teaching home economics in Nigerian schools and colleges with a particular reference to Owerri North local government area of Imo State. To achieve this objective, three research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and tables to analyze research questions and Chi-square statistical tool was used for testing of research hypotheses. A structured questionnaire was used as the major instrument for data collection from the respondents in Owerri North local government area of Imo State. After the careful analysis of the data, the following findings were revealed that; there are challenges facing teachers for effective teaching of home economics in Owerri North local government area and there are strategies used for effective teaching of home economics in Owerri North local government area. The study was concluded with some recommendations that all teachers of home economics at various levels should create a good learning environment that is capable of motivating students to participate in home economics lessons and government should provide conducive learning environment in all public secondary schools and also monitor private schools, set standards for all schools to comply or close them.
