Thesis Abstract

Integrated Farm Cooperatives (IFCs) are increasingly proposed as a mechanism to enhance rural livelihoods by aggregating smallholder farmers, improving market access, and promoting risk management. This study addresses the problem of insufficient resilience among rural households facing climate variability, volatile input costs, and limited access to credit and extension services. The aim is to design, implement, and evaluate IFCs that unify member farmers under shared services, collective bargaining, and value-added activities, thereby improving income stability, food security, and social capital. Specific objectives include (i) diagnosing existing governance and market constraints for smallholders in the study area, (ii) developing an IFC design aligned with local agro-ecologies and social norms, (iii) implementing a pilot IFC over two production cycles, and (iv) evaluating economic, social, and resilience outcomes using a mixed-methods framework. The study employs a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. The population comprises 2,400 smallholder farmers across five rural communities, with a purposive subsample of 480 farmers forming the pilot IFC membership and 120 non-member farmers as a control group. Data collection combines structured household surveys (n=480 members, n=120 controls), farmer group records, price and yield data from two harvest cycles, key informant interviews (n=40), and focus group discussions (n=20 groups). Instrument validity and reliability are ensured through a pilot test (Cronbach’s alpha for multi-item scales >0.7) and triangulation across data sources. The study also expects that governance quality, trust, and information sharing within the IFC will positively influence participation rates and financial performance, while mitigating free-rider and coordination problems. Potential challenges identified include initial capital requirements, alignment of diverse member interests, and ensuring equitable benefit sharing across gender and age groups. The study contributes to knowledge by empirically detailing how integrated farm cooperatives can be crafted to deliver measurable livelihood resilience in rural settings, bridging the gap between cooperative theory and practice. It extends the literature on rural development and agrarian finance by providing a robust design and evaluation framework for IFCs, incorporating both economic viability and social sustainability, and integrating social-ecological resilience theory with RBV. Policy relevance is enhanced by deriving scalable governance templates, service packages (bulk input procurement, shared processing facilities, and collective marketing), and an implementation roadmap that can be adapted to similar rural contexts. The main conclusion posits that well-designed IFCs, when embedded in strong local institutions and guided by participatory governance, can significantly elevate livelihoods and resilience; recommendations include scaling pilot implementations with standardized governance manuals, establishing credit lines with partner microfinance institutions, and prioritizing capacity-building in leadership, bookkeeping, and climate-smart agricultural practices to sustain long-term impact.
