Rural agricultural households often face significant financial barriers that hinder their productivity, income diversification, and overall economic resilience, thereby exacerbating rural poverty and impeding sustainable development. In this context, microfinance has emerged as a potential tool to bridge financial gaps, yet its design, implementation, and impact evaluation within rural farming communities remain inadequately researched, particularly in terms of tailored interventions that address unique local needs. This study aims to develop and empirically evaluate a context-specific microfinance program targeted at improving access to credit for rural agricultural households, thereby enhancing their productivity, income levels, and socio-economic well-being. The specific objectives are to assess the financial needs and repayment capacities of the households; to design an appropriate microfinance intervention aligned with these needs; to implement the program over a 12-month period; and to evaluate its effects on household economic outcomes and livelihoods. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The quantitative component employs a quasi-experimental design with a treatment and a control group, involving a total sample of 300 rural households randomly selected from two comparable districts. The treatment group (150 households) participates in the microfinance program, while the control group (150 households) does not, facilitating rigorous impact assessment through difference-in-differences (DiD) analysis. It employs the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory and the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework to underpin the program design and impact analysis, offering theoretical and practical implications for policymakers, microfinance institutions, and rural development practitioners. The findings will inform the formulation of scalable microfinance models that promote financial inclusion, resilience, and rural economic development. The main conclusion emphasizes that carefully designed microfinance programs, responsive to the local needs and capacities of rural agricultural households, can significantly enhance their economic outcomes. Based on the findings, recommendations include integrating financial literacy components into microfinance schemes, fostering partnerships between microfinance providers and agricultural extension services, and adopting flexible loan terms to accommodate seasonal income variations. The study also advocates for further longitudinal research to examine the long-term sustainability of microfinance interventions and their broader social impacts on rural communities.
