Challenges associated with the poor performance of home economics students

Thesis Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the challenges of associated with the poor performance of home economics students with a particular reference to Osimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. To achieve this objective, three research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. To achieve this objective, three research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The data was collected from primary sources. The primary data were collected with the help of a well-structured questionnaire of two sections administered to the respondents in selected secondary schools in Osimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. The collected data were analyzed with tables and simple percentages to analyze the research questions while Chi-square statistical tool was used to test research hypotheses. The study reveals that the study habits do not influence students of Home Economics junior secondary schools in Osimili North local government area of Delta State; and study habit influences students’ academic achievement in Home Economics in junior secondary schools in Osimili North local government area of Delta State. The study concluded with some recommendations that teachers of Home Economics should not label students in any dimension as poor students but should work towards a balance and wholeness of knowledge acquisition by shaping attitudes and orientation of the students towards all round learning.
