Thesis Abstract
Smallholder dairy farming in rural Armenia faces persistent low productivity, market access constraints, and limited access to credit and cooperative governance, which collectively undermine earnings, livelihoods, and rural development. The study addresses the gap in understanding how cooperative models influence dairy economics among smallholders and how organizational and market structures interact with production efficiency, price realization, and risk management in the Armenian context. The aim is to assess the economic performance of smallholder dairy within the rural Armenian cooperative framework and to identify mechanisms through which cooperatives affect livelihoods, resource allocation, and resilience. Specific objectives are to (i) quantify dairy productivity, input-output costs, and gross margins among cooperative members; (ii) evaluate pricing, bargaining power, and market access benefits conferred by cooperatives; (iii) examine capital formation, credit access, and investment in milking, feeding, and herd management; (iv) analyze governance, trust, and participation as determinants of cooperative efficiency; and (v) develop policy and management recommendations to enhance profitability and sustainability. A mixed-methods design will be employed, integrating a cross-sectional survey with qualitative case studies. The population comprises registered smallholder dairy farmers (n?420) affiliated with three medium-sized cooperatives in Gegharkunik, Aragatsotn, and Tavush regions. A stratified random sample of 300 farmers will be surveyed using a structured questionnaire to capture household demographics, herd size and productivity, input costs, milk volumes, prices received, seasonal fluctuations, credit usage, and cooperative benefits and costs. Additionally, in-depth interviews (n?45) with cooperative managers, board members, and key informants, and focus group discussions (n?12) with farmer groups will illuminate governance processes, trust, decision-making, and perceived risk sharing. Data collection instruments will be pre-tested and refined for reliability (Cronbach’s alpha targets ?0.7 for scales) and validity (content validity via expert reviews). Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, production and efficiency metrics, and econometric modelling. Stochastic frontier analysis will estimate technical and residual efficiencies, with a Cobb-Douglas production function incorporating inputs such as concentrate, fodder, labor, and veterinary services. A two-stage Levenberg-Marquardt estimation will test the impact of cooperative membership on efficiency and profitability. Market power and price realization will be examined through hedonic price modelling and regression analyses, controlling for regional fixed effects and seasonality. Propensity score matching will compare cooperative members with non-members to identify causal effects on gross margins. Qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic analysis, coding transcripts to identify themes related to governance, trust, knowledge transfer, risk management, and barriers to upgrading. A convergent parallel design will triangulate findings across data sources, with integration through joint display analysis to explain how governance and market access mediate productivity and profitability. Key expected findings include (i) higher gross margins and improved liquidity among cooperative members relative to non-members, driven by collective bargaining, shared infrastructure, and access to credit; (ii) partial technical efficiency gains from cooperative services such as bulk purchasing, veterinary support, and milking technology, yet with variance tied to herd size, distance to collection points, and seasonal feed stress; (iii) governance quality and member participation positively associated with lower transaction costs and greater investment in productivity-enhancing assets; and (iv) market access improvements yield more stable prices but require enhanced branding and traceability to maximize premium returns. The study is anticipated to contribute to knowledge by linking cooperative governance and market structures to measurable economic performance in smallholder dairy, offering a contextually grounded model for how collective action translates into resilience and growth in post-Soviet agricultural systems. The main conclusion is that well-governed, participation-driven cooperatives with reliable market linkages and access to affordable credit significantly improve smallholder dairy economics in rural Armenia, though benefits are contingent on effective governance, timely information dissemination, and targeted investment in feed, genetics, and cold-chain logistics. Recommendations include strengthening cooperative governance mechanisms (transparent budgeting, performance audits, member education), expanding formal credit facilities and savings schemes linked to dairy performance, investing in shared processing and cold-chain infrastructure, developing price-hedging and contract farming arrangements with dairy processors, and implementing policy incentives to reduce input costs and support extension services for breed improvement and feed efficiency.
