Thesis Abstract

Rural communities worldwide face increasing economic vulnerabilities due to environmental fluctuations, limited access to formal financial services, and inadequate institutional support, which threaten the resilience of rural entrepreneurs and the sustainability of local livelihoods. Despite growing interest in rural development, there is a paucity of comprehensive frameworks that systematically evaluate the mechanisms underpinning entrepreneurial resilience and their contribution to livelihood sustainability in rural settings. This study aims to develop and empirically validate a robust conceptual framework for assessing rural entrepreneurial resilience and livelihood sustainability, with a focus on smallholder farmers and rural micro-entrepreneurs in agricultural and agro-processing sectors. The specific objectives include (1) identifying key resilience factors influencing rural entrepreneurial performance; (2) examining the relationship between entrepreneurial resilience and livelihood outcomes; (3) integrating contextual variables such as environmental shocks, social capital, and institutional support into the resilience assessment framework; and (4) proposing a practical model for policymakers and development practitioners to evaluate and enhance resilience strategies. The study adopts a mixed-methods research design, combining qualitative exploratory interviews and focus group discussions with quantitative survey data to ensure a comprehensive understanding of resilience dynamics. The target population comprises 1,200 rural entrepreneurs operating across three distinct agro-ecological zones, selected through stratified random sampling to capture variations in environmental and socioeconomic contexts. A structured questionnaire, developed based on the resilience and livelihood literature, serves as the primary data collection instrument, complemented by key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Quantitative data will be analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the relationships among key resilience constructs and livelihood indicators, following the theoretical foundation provided by the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework and the Resilience Theory. The SEM approach allows for the simultaneous assessment of direct and indirect effects of entrepreneurial resilience factors, such as financial literacy, social networks, risk-taking propensity, and adaptive capacity, on livelihood sustainability outcomes like income stability, food security, and social well-being. Qualitative data from interviews and focus groups will undergo thematic analysis to capture nuanced contextual insights, complementing the quantitative findings and facilitating model refinement. Expected findings include the identification of critical resilience determinants that significantly influence livelihood sustainability, illuminating pathways through which entrepreneurial resilience mitigates vulnerability and fosters adaptive responses to shocks. The study anticipates revealing that factors such as social capital and access to supportive institutions play mediating roles in strengthening resilience and ensuring sustainable livelihoods. The integrated framework will provide a validated model capable of guiding targeted interventions aimed at resilience enhancement in rural contexts. This research makes a substantive contribution to knowledge by bridging the gap between resilience theory and practical livelihood assessment tools in rural economics. The developed framework offers a theoretically grounded, empirically validated tool for policymakers, development agencies, and local entrepreneurs to assess current resilience levels and design context-specific strategies for sustainable development. The study concludes that fostering entrepreneurial resilience through strategic capacity building, institutional support, and social capital development is essential for sustainable rural livelihoods. Based on the findings, it is recommended that policy interventions prioritize strengthening entrepreneurial skills, improving access to financial and informational resources, and fostering community-based social networks. Further research should explore longitudinal assessments of resilience-building initiatives and their long-term impacts on livelihood dynamics. Overall, this study provides a vital foundation for advancing resilience-based rural development policies and practices, contributing to more resilient, sustainable, and economically empowered rural communities.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to develop a practical framework to assess how resilient rural entrepreneurs are and whether their livelihoods are sustainable over time. Rural communities often depend heavily on small-scale businesses and farming activities for their income and survival. However, these entrepreneurs face many challenges like economic shocks, climate change, market fluctuation, and limited access to resources, which threaten their ability to stay resilient and maintain their livelihoods. Despite the importance of these issues, there is currently no comprehensive, easy-to-use framework for measuring or understanding what makes rural entrepreneurs resilient and how this resilience contributes to long-term livelihood sustainability. The study will first review existing theories and concepts related to resilience and sustainable livelihoods, drawing from literature in economics, development, and entrepreneurship. It will identify gaps in current methods and understanding, mainly how resilience is measured and linked directly to livelihood outcomes in rural settings. Using this information, the researcher will develop a new framework that links key variables such as access to credit, social networks, diversification strategies, and adaptive capacity to livelihood sustainability. Methodologically, the research will adopt a mixed-method approach. Quantitative data will be collected from a sample of 300 rural entrepreneurs through structured questionnaires, focusing on key resilience factors and livelihood indicators. Qualitative data will be gathered via interviews and focus groups to gain deeper insights into personal experiences and contextual factors. Data analysis will involve statistical techniques like multiple regression analysis to identify significant predictors of resilience and livelihood outcomes, complemented by thematic analysis for qualitative responses. The expected contribution of this study is a validated, user-friendly model that policymakers and development agencies can apply to evaluate and enhance the resilience of rural entrepreneurs. The research aims to show how strengthening specific resilience factors can lead to more sustainable livelihoods, providing targeted recommendations for supporting rural entrepreneurship in vulnerable communities. The overall outcome will be a set of strategies and tools to promote economic resilience and sustainability in rural areas.
