Thesis Abstract

The escalating prevalence of physical inactivity among school-aged adolescents in urban environments presents a critical public health challenge, necessitating the evaluation of school-based interventions such as wellness programs to promote active lifestyles. This study aims to assess the impact of structured school wellness programs on students’ physical activity levels in urban secondary schools, with specific objectives to determine changes in activity levels pre- and post-implementation, identify factors influencing program efficacy, and explore teachers’ and students’ perceptions of program components. The research adopts a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, integrating quantitative analysis of physical activity data with qualitative insights to provide a comprehensive understanding of program outcomes. The population comprises 1,200 students aged 13-18 years across six urban secondary schools, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness. A sample of 600 students (100 per school) was determined using Cochran’s formula, with proportional sampling within schools. Data collection involved the deployment of accelerometers for a seven-day period to objectively measure students’ physical activity levels, complemented by structured questionnaires capturing demographic variables, participation rates, and motivational factors. Additionally, semi-structured interviews with teachers and focus group discussions with students were conducted to gather qualitative perspectives on program implementation, challenges, and perceived benefits. Instrument validity was established through expert review and pilot testing; reliability of questionnaires was confirmed via Cronbach’s alpha exceeding 0.8. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and multiple regression analysis to assess changes over time and identify predictors of physical activity, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative transcripts to explore contextual factors influencing program engagement. The findings are expected to reveal statistically significant increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels among students participating in wellness programs, with the regression analysis indicating that program participation, motivation levels, and peer support significantly predict increased activity. Qualitative analysis is anticipated to uncover key themes such as program relevance, school environment supportiveness, and existing barriers, which influence the effectiveness of wellness initiatives. These results will contribute to existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the tangible benefits of school wellness programs within urban contexts and enriching the theoretical discourse with insights from multiple stakeholder perspectives. The study advances knowledge by integrating objective measurements with experiential data, thus offering a nuanced understanding of how school wellness initiatives influence youth physical activity behaviors. It underscores the importance of tailored program design, stakeholder engagement, and supportive school climates to maximize impact. The main conclusion emphasizes that well-implemented wellness programs can substantially improve physical activity among urban secondary school students. It recommends that policymakers and school administrators prioritize the integration of comprehensive wellness strategies, foster student motivation and peer support, and address infrastructural barriers. Furthermore, the study suggests avenues for future research, including longitudinal assessments and intervention refinement to sustain and enhance physical activity levels over time. Ultimately, this research underscores the vital role of school-based wellness programs in combating youth inactivity and promoting lifelong health benefits within urban educational settings.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how school wellness programs influence the physical activity levels of students in urban schools. Many urban schools have started implementing wellness programs that promote healthy behaviors, including physical activity, to improve students' overall health and academic performance. However, there is limited understanding of how effective these programs are in actually increasing student activity levels, especially in urban settings where environmental and social factors may challenge participation. This study aims to fill that gap by assessing the impact of these programs, providing valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and health professionals. The research will involve examining one or more urban schools that have implemented wellness programs. It will identify specific activities within the programs aimed at encouraging physical activity. The researcher will collect data using questionnaires to measure students’ activity levels before and after program implementation, as well as through direct observation or accelerometers to get objective data. There will also be interviews or focus groups with teachers, students, and program coordinators to gain qualitative insights into how the programs are run and perceived. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics to summarize the data, paired t-tests (or equivalent) to compare student activity levels before and after the program, and thematic analysis for qualitative interviews. The researcher may also use regression analysis to explore relationships between program components and activity increases. The study will contribute new knowledge about which aspects of wellness programs are most effective in increasing physical activity among urban students. It can inform future program design and policy to promote healthier lifestyles in urban schools. The expected outcome is that well-structured wellness programs positively impact students’ activity levels, leading to recommendations on best practices for implementation and sustainability in urban school environments.
