Abstract
Overcoming adversities and achieving academic success is a formidable challenge for at-risk youth, who often face multifaceted barriers stemming from socioeconomic disadvantages, family circumstances, and personal struggles. This master's thesis explores the pivotal role of school-based guidance and counseling services in fostering resilience and promoting academic achievement among this vulnerable population. Through a qualitative case study approach, the research delves into the interventions and strategies employed by counselors and support personnel within an urban school district.
The study draws insights from three distinct cases, each highlighting a unique dimension of the challenges faced by at-risk students and the corresponding counseling approaches employed. The first case examines the implementation of a comprehensive counseling program designed to address the needs of students from low-income households, encompassing academic support, mentorship, and social-emotional learning. The second case investigates the role of trauma-informed counseling practices in supporting students affected by adverse childhood experiences or exposure to violence. The third case explores the collaborative efforts between school counselors and community organizations, underscoring the importance of leveraging external resources and incorporating culturally responsive practices.
By analyzing these diverse cases, the research aims to uncover the multifaceted strategies employed by guidance counselors, the challenges they encounter, and the factors that contribute to successful interventions. Furthermore, the study seeks to identify best practices, policy implications, and potential areas for improvement in the delivery of comprehensive and effective counseling services for at-risk youth.
Ultimately, this master's thesis endeavors to contribute to the broader discourse on educational equity and the empowerment of marginalized populations. By highlighting the transformative potential of guidance and counseling interventions, the research aspires to inform educational policies and practices, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment that enables all students, regardless of their circumstances, to develop resilience and achieve academic success.
