Thesis Abstract

Adolescent mental health remains a critical concern in secondary schools worldwide, with rising incidences of anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges affecting students’ academic performance, social development, and overall well-being. Despite numerous interventions, peer counseling has emerged as a promising strategy to promote mental health among adolescents, driven by the accessibility and relatability of peer supporters. This study aims to empirically assess the impact of peer counseling on the mental health outcomes of secondary school students, with a focus on evaluating its effectiveness in reducing psychological distress and enhancing coping mechanisms within the school environment. The specific objectives include (1) determining the extent to which peer counseling influences adolescent mental health; (2) examining students’ perceptions of peer counseling effectiveness; (3) exploring gender-based differences in the impact of peer counseling; and (4) identifying challenges faced in implementing peer counseling programs. The study adopts a mixed-methods research design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches to obtain comprehensive insights. The quantitative component employs a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design involving an intact sample of 300 students from six secondary schools, with 150 participating in peer counseling intervention and 150 serving as a control cohort. Participants are selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across gender and academic levels. Data collection instruments include standardized mental health assessment scales, specifically the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), complemented by a structured questionnaire measuring students’ attitudes towards peer counseling. Qualitative data are gathered through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with peer counselors, students, and school counselors, providing contextual understanding of peer counseling dynamics. Validity and reliability of instruments are established via expert review and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85. Data analysis involves descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests to compare pre- and post-intervention scores, and multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of mental health improvement. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data to uncover perceptions, challenges, and suggestions related to peer counseling. It is anticipated that findings will demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in depression, anxiety, and stress levels among students who participate in peer counseling, alongside positive shifts in attitudes toward help-seeking behaviors. Additionally, the study expects to identify gendered differences in the effectiveness of peer support, with implications for targeted interventions. The results aim to substantiate the role of peer counseling as an effective mental health promotion strategy within secondary schools and contribute to the theoretical understanding of peer influence based on Social Learning Theory and the Self-Determination Theory. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the efficacy of peer counseling in fostering adolescent mental health, addressing a critical gap in the contextual application of peer-led interventions in educational settings. The study’s insights will inform policymakers, school administrators, and mental health practitioners on best practices for implementing sustainable peer counseling programs. It is recommended that secondary schools institutionalize peer counseling initiatives, incorporate ongoing training for peer supporters, and integrate mental health education into the curriculum. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts and evaluate the scalability of peer counseling models across diverse educational contexts. Overall, this study underscores the importance of peer-based approaches as cost-effective, culturally relevant, and accessible means of promoting adolescent mental health in secondary schools.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to understand how peer counseling programs influence the mental health of adolescents in secondary schools. Adolescence is a critical period when mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress often emerge. Schools are key environments where young people spend much of their time, and peer counseling—where trained students offer support to their peers—has become a popular intervention to promote mental well-being. Despite widespread use, there is limited rigorous evidence on how effective peer counseling is in improving adolescents' mental health, especially in specific cultural or regional contexts. The study will explore whether participating in peer counseling positively impacts students' mental health indicators, such as reduced anxiety and depression levels, improved self-esteem, and better coping skills. It will also examine students' perceptions of peer counseling and how it influences their willingness to seek help for mental health concerns. The research addresses the gap in current literature by providing context-specific data and testing the effectiveness of peer counselor training and activities. Step by step, the researcher will first review existing literature on peer counseling and adolescent mental health. Next, they will select a representative sample of secondary schools with active peer counseling programs, aiming for at least 200 students. Data will be collected through standardized questionnaires measuring mental health status and interviews to gather qualitative insights into students' experiences. The researcher will use quantitative analysis techniques such as paired sample t-tests or regression analysis to compare mental health scores before and after participation, and thematic analysis to interpret interview data. The expected contribution of this research is providing evidence-based recommendations for schools and policymakers on implementing and optimizing peer counseling programs. The findings are anticipated to show that peer counseling has a positive effect on adolescents’ mental health, encouraging wider adoption of such interventions. Overall, the study aims to enhance understanding of peer-led support systems and their role in fostering mental well-being among young people.
