Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Female prostitution in Nigerian tertiary institutions has become a growing concern due to its prevalence and impact on the academic and social lives of students. This study aims to investigate the causes, prevalence, and effects of female prostitution specifically within the College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with current and former students engaged in prostitution, as well as key stakeholders such as college administrators and social workers. Additionally, surveys will be distributed to a sample of students to gather data on the extent of prostitution within the institution. Preliminary findings suggest that economic hardship, peer pressure, and societal expectations are among the key factors driving female students into prostitution. The prevalence of prostitution within the College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin is higher than initially anticipated, with a significant number of students reported to be involved in such activities. The effects of female prostitution on students' academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being will also be examined. Early indications point to a negative impact on academic outcomes, as students involved in prostitution often struggle to balance their studies with their involvement in the sex trade. Furthermore, there are concerns about the psychological toll of engaging in sex work, with many students experiencing feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety. The implications of these findings are far-reaching, calling for urgent intervention from both educational institutions and relevant authorities. Strategies to address the root causes of female prostitution, such as providing financial support, mentorship programs, and counseling services, should be implemented to prevent further escalation of this issue. Additionally, efforts to raise awareness and promote a culture of respect and dignity among students are essential in combating the normalization of prostitution within tertiary institutions. Overall, this research sheds light on a pressing social issue and offers valuable insights into the specific context of female prostitution within the College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin. By understanding the causes, prevalence, and effects of prostitution, stakeholders can work towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for all students.
