Digital media has become an integral part of university students' academic and social engagement, raising concerns regarding its impact on the development of critical thinking skills essential for effective analysis, evaluation, and logical reasoning. This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship between digital media usage and critical thinking abilities among university students, seeking to identify specific dimensions of digital media that influence cognitive skills positively or negatively. The research objectives include determining the extent of digital media engagement among students, examining the levels of critical thinking skills within this population, and assessing the mediating role of digital media consumption patterns on critical thinking development. Employing a correlational research design rooted in pragmatism, the study targeted a stratified random sample of 400 undergraduate students from a large urban university to enhance the representativeness and generalizability of findings. Data collection instruments comprised a validated digital media usage questionnaire and the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST), adapted to the local context to ensure cultural relevance. The questionnaire captured quantitative data on students' frequency, duration, and types of digital media engagement, while the CCTST provided standardized measures of critical reasoning skills. To ensure validity and reliability, pilot testing was conducted with 50 students, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeded 0.80 for all instruments. An inverse relationship is expected between passive consumption of digital media and critical analysis, aligning with the theoretical framework that excessive passive engagement diminishes reflective and analytical thought. The study anticipates revealing significant moderating effects of digital media patterns on critical thinking, highlighting the importance of content and usage context. This research contributes novel empirical evidence to the relatively limited literature on digital media’s cognitive impacts within the African higher education context, extending current understanding of how modern digital interfaces influence critical reasoning skills. It offers a theoretical clarification of the mechanisms through which media dependency and cognitive engagement interact, informing both academic discourse and policy-oriented interventions aimed at fostering balanced digital media use among students. The main conclusion posits that while digital media serves as an educational resource, its unregulated or passive use may impede the development of vital critical thinking proficiency. Based on these findings, recommendations include integrating digital literacy programs into university curricula, promoting active engagement with educational content, and fostering media awareness initiatives that encourage reflective media consumption. The study advocates for further longitudinal research to explore causal relationships and to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted interventions designed to optimize digital media’s potential as a tool for critical cognitive development.
