The rapid advancement of digital technologies has significantly transformed service delivery models within the banking sector, with rural cooperative banks increasingly adopting digital solutions to enhance customer engagement and operational efficiency amidst growing competition and changing customer expectations. Despite this widespread digital migration, there remains limited empirical evidence on how digital transformation initiatives specifically impact customer engagement metrics in rural cooperative banking contexts, where infrastructural, technological, and socio-cultural challenges are pronounced. This study aims to evaluate the influence of digital transformation on customer engagement dimensions—including trust, satisfaction, loyalty, and perceived value—in rural cooperative banks. The specific objectives are to identify key digital transformation strategies employed, assess their impact on customer engagement, explore moderating factors such as digital literacy and infrastructural barriers, and provide actionable recommendations for enhancing digital customer engagement in rural banking environments. A quantitative research design employing a descriptive and explanatory approach was adopted for this investigation. The population comprised active customers of five rural cooperative banks within a specified regional jurisdiction, with an estimated total of 15,000 customers. A stratified random sampling technique was utilized to select a sample size of 1,200 respondents, ensuring proportional representation across different age groups, gender, and account types. Data collection instruments consisted of a structured questionnaire developed based on existing validated scales for digital engagement, trust, satisfaction, and loyalty, adapted to the rural banking context. The contribution to knowledge lies in bridging the existing research gap concerning the empirical effects of digital transformation on customer engagement specifically within rural cooperative banks, emphasizing the role of socio-technical contextual factors. The study offers a validated conceptual model illustrating the pathways through which digital initiatives influence customer perceptions and behaviors, integrating relevant theories such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Social Exchange Theory to explain customer response mechanisms. The main conclusion highlights that effective digital transformation strategies significantly enhance customer engagement in rural banking contexts, provided infrastructural and literacy barriers are addressed. Based on the findings, it is recommended that rural cooperative banks prioritize investments in digital infrastructure, offer targeted digital literacy training, and tailor digital services to meet local socio-cultural needs to maximize customer trust, satisfaction, and loyalty. The study further suggests avenues for future research, including longitudinal designs to assess the sustained impact of digital initiatives and qualitative explorations of customer perceptions in diverse rural settings.
