Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital technologies has transformed the landscape of civic participation, presenting both opportunities and challenges for university students’ engagement in civic activities. Despite the increasing integration of digital platforms in everyday life, there remains limited empirical understanding of how digital literacy influences the civic engagement of young adults in higher education settings. This study aims to assess the impact of digital literacy on civic engagement among university students, with specific objectives to determine the level of digital literacy, measure civic engagement activities, explore the relationship between digital literacy and civic participation, and identify factors mediating this relationship. Adopting a quantitative cross-sectional research design, the study surveyed a stratified random sample of 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students from a major university. The population comprised students across multiple faculties to ensure broad representativeness. Data were collected through structured questionnaires comprising validated scales the Digital Literacy Scale adapted from the European Digital Competence Framework (DIGCOMP) and the Civic Engagement Inventory based on the Civic Voluntarism Model. The instrument’s validity was confirmed via expert review, and reliability was established through Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85 for all scales. Ethical approval was obtained, ensuring informed consent and confidentiality protocols. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics to profile digital literacy levels and civic engagement extents. Inferential statistics included multiple regression analysis to assess the predictive power of digital literacy on civic engagement, controlling for demographic variables such as age, gender, and academic discipline. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the hypothesized mediating roles of factors such as digital access, socio-political awareness, and peer influence. Thematic analysis was also conducted on open-ended responses to uncover nuanced insights into students’ perceptions of digital tools in civic activities. It is anticipated that findings will reveal a positive correlation between digital literacy and civic engagement, indicating that higher levels of digital competence significantly predict increased participation in civic activities both online and offline. The research expects to identify digital accessibility and socio-political awareness as key mediators in enhancing civic participation among digitally literate students. Furthermore, the study anticipates revealing that digital literacy not only influences traditional civic engagement but also facilitates novel forms of participation, such as online petitions, social media advocacy, and digital voting. This investigation contributes to the existing body of knowledge by empirically establishing the link between digital literacy and civic engagement within a university context, filling a gap left by predominantly qualitative studies. The findings offer practical insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and civic organizations seeking to harness digital competencies to foster active citizenship among youth. The research underscores the importance of integrating targeted digital literacy programs and civic education into higher education curricula. The study concludes that enhancing digital literacy is a vital strategy to amplify civic engagement among university students. Recommendations include developing comprehensive digital literacy interventions that incorporate civic education components, promoting equitable access to digital resources, and encouraging participatory digital activities on campus. Further research could explore longitudinal impacts of digital literacy initiatives and extend the investigation to diverse geographical and cultural settings to generalize the findings. Overall, this study emphasizes that equipping students with advanced digital skills is essential for nurturing well-informed, active citizens in the digital age.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how digital literacy influences the way university students participate in civic activities, such as voting, protests, volunteering, and online advocacy. Digital literacy refers to the skills needed to effectively find, evaluate, create, and communicate information through digital platforms like social media, websites, and online forums. Civic engagement involves active participation in community and societal issues. Understanding the relationship between these two areas is important because, in today's digital age, access to and ability to use digital tools can significantly shape students' involvement in democratic processes and social issues. The main problem this study addresses is the limited understanding of how digital literacy levels among university students impact their civic behaviors. Although there is existing research on digital skills and civic participation separately, few studies have examined how these skills specifically influence engagement among young adults in higher education. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating whether higher digital literacy correlates with increased civic participation and identifying potential barriers or facilitating factors. The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on digital literacy and civic engagement. Next, a survey will be designed and administered to a sample of 300 university students across different faculties using structured questionnaires. Data will be collected on students' digital skills, frequency and type of civic activities, and demographic information. The collected data will be analyzed quantitatively using statistical methods, including regression analysis to determine the strength of the relationship between digital literacy and civic engagement, and descriptive statistics to profile the participants. The study’s contribution lies in providing evidence-based insights into how digital skills can be harnessed to enhance civic participation among young adults. It will also offer recommendations for educational institutions to develop targeted digital literacy programs that promote active civic involvement. The expected outcome is an identification of key digital skills that influence civic actions and a better understanding of how digital literacy can be integrated into civic education efforts to foster more engaged and informed citizens.
