Thesis Abstract

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and pervasive digital environments, understanding the role of digital literacy in fostering civic engagement among university students has become increasingly vital for promoting participatory democracy. This study addresses the pressing concern that while digital technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for civic participation, disparities in digital literacy may hinder students’ ability to effectively engage in civic activities, thereby impacting civic knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The primary aim of this research is to assess the extent to which digital literacy influences civic engagement among undergraduate students at the University of State, with specific objectives to quantify digital literacy levels, evaluate the relationship between digital literacy and civic engagement, and identify mediating factors such as motivation and access to digital resources. Employing a cross-sectional survey design, the study sampled 1,200 undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across faculties and year groups. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire comprising validated scales for digital literacy, adapted from the Digital Literacy Scale (DLS), and civic engagement, adapted from the Civic Engagement Scale (CES). The questionnaire also captured demographic variables, access to digital resources, and motivational factors. To ensure reliability and validity, the instruments underwent pilot testing, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80 for all scales. The findings underscore the importance of integrating comprehensive digital literacy programs within university curricula to foster informed, active, and empowered citizens capable of participating meaningfully in democratic processes. The research concludes that elevating digital literacy among university students is a critical pathway to increasing civic engagement. Recommendations include implementing targeted digital literacy training modules, enhancing access to digital devices and internet facilities, and developing campus-based civic engagement initiatives that leverage digital platforms. It also advocates for ongoing research to explore longitudinal impacts of digital literacy interventions and to further investigate contextual factors influencing the digital literacy–civic engagement relationship. Ultimately, this study emphasizes that fostering digital competence is essential not only for academic success but also for nurturing active civic participation in contemporary society.
