Abstract
The influence of social media on mental health has become a topic of increasing concern, particularly among young adults. This thesis aims to analyze the impact of social media on the mental health of young adults, considering both the positive and negative implications. The research methodology employed qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data from a sample of young adults aged 18-25 years. Chapter One provides an introduction to the study, outlining the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure, and key definitions. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review consisting of ten key themes related to social media and mental health in young adults. These themes include social media usage patterns, impact on self-esteem, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), and online validation seeking behavior, among others. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed, including the research design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations, validity, reliability, and limitations of the research methodology. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are discussed in depth, highlighting the various ways in which social media affects the mental health of young adults. The results reveal both positive outcomes such as social support and increased connectedness, as well as negative impacts including anxiety, depression, and body image issues. Chapter Five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing the implications for mental health professionals, educators, and policymakers. Recommendations for promoting healthy social media use among young adults are provided, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy, self-regulation, and positive online interactions. Overall, this thesis contributes to the ongoing dialogue on the relationship between social media and mental health in young adults, offering insights for future research and intervention strategies.
