Abstract
This thesis presents the research findings on the development of a sustainable packaging solution aimed at extending the shelf life of fresh produce. The increasing demand for fresh produce globally has raised concerns about food wastage due to spoilage during storage and transportation. The study focuses on addressing this issue by exploring innovative packaging materials and technologies that can effectively prolong the shelf life of fresh produce while minimizing environmental impact. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review to understand the current trends and challenges in food packaging technology. This was followed by experimental studies to evaluate the effectiveness of different sustainable packaging solutions in extending the shelf life of various types of fresh produce. The findings reveal that the use of biodegradable and compostable materials, as well as active packaging technologies such as modified atmosphere packaging and antimicrobial coatings, can significantly improve the shelf life of fresh produce compared to traditional packaging methods. The thesis discusses the implications of the research findings in terms of reducing food wastage, improving food safety, and promoting environmental sustainability in the food supply chain. The study also highlights the importance of considering factors such as cost-effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and consumer acceptance in the development and implementation of sustainable packaging solutions for fresh produce. Overall, this thesis contributes to the ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability of food packaging practices and mitigate the environmental impact of food production and distribution.
