Urban street art has become a prominent form of visual expression in contemporary global cities, often serving as a dynamic medium through which communities articulate their identities and foster social engagement. Despite its increasing visibility and cultural significance, limited empirical research has systematically examined the extent to which urban street art influences community cohesion, local identity, and social participation. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the impact of street art on community identity and social engagement in the context of the metropolitan city of Springfield, a city characterized by diverse socio-economic neighborhoods and a vibrant street art scene. The primary aim of the research is to evaluate the socio-cultural effects of street art on community groups, with specific objectives to assess residents' perceptions of street art's role in shaping community identity, to determine the relationship between street art visibility and social engagement levels, and to identify contextual factors that facilitate or hinder this relationship. Guided by social capital theory and the theory of place attachment, the study hypothesizes that greater exposure to street art correlates positively with heightened community identity and increased social participation. The research adopts a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches for comprehensive analysis. The quantitative phase involves a cross-sectional survey administered to a stratified random sample of 400 residents across selected neighborhoods in Springfield, with data collected through a structured questionnaire measuring perceptions of street art, community attachment, and social engagement activities. The reliability and validity of the instrument are established via Cronbach's alpha coefficients and pilot testing. Policymakers, urban planners, and community organizations can utilize these findings to develop strategies that harness street art as a tool for fostering inclusive and participatory urban environments. The study concludes that urban street art plays a vital role in shaping community identity and encouraging social engagement, advocating for deliberate integration of street art initiatives within broader urban development policies. Recommendations include establishing collaborative frameworks between artists and local communities, promoting street art tours and festivals to amplify participatory opportunities, and adopting policies that protect and promote socially meaningful street artworks. Future research is suggested to explore longitudinal impacts and comparative studies across different urban contexts to deepen understanding of street art’s societal functions.
