Thesis Abstract

This project report is focused in the provision of a Two-Shaft Table loom. It aims to alleviate the problem of insufficient facilities in the area of weaving in the textile studio of this Department by providing a Two-shaft Table Loom as a means of improving the academic standard of students.

Included here is the ancillary objective, which extends the material, produced from the loom for the production of contemporary male apparel.

In addition, in the market, meeting the demand or the right choice of prospective buyer in terms of colour, design and motifs has been a major issue. So therefore this research project is also an attempt to use the woven fabric gotten from the loom to create contemporary male apparels. This project research adopted the studio exploration method.

Thesis Overview

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

A textile material is any item woven from natural or synthetic fibre. This includes fabrics made by the interlacing of yarns or threads of knitting, braiding, netting and felting. The primary natural fibres are from animal sources (wool, silk, and hair). Those from vegetable sources are (cotton, flax and hemp) and less common a mineral source. Synthetic fibres have been under- developed from the late 19th century. The first synthetic fibres are known as regenerated fibres and were of natural origin, such as cotton or wood or wood pulp.
According to Wikipedia 2016, weaving is a textile craft in which two distinct set of yarns or threads are interlaced to form a fabric or cloth. As defined by wryly and cited by Omonjuanfo (2012), weaving is one of the oldest arts known to man; it is the systematic interlacing of two or more sets of elements usually but not necessarily at right angles to form a coherent structure. Synonymous to this weaving, we have tapestry, damask, brocade, corduroy, pile carpet, gauze, and twill, satin, and plain weaves etcetera.
But before weaving takes place, there is a device needed for the process to be complete even when other materials are intact. The name of this device is Loom.

According to Merriam – Webster dictionary, a loom is frame or machine for interlacing at right angles two or more sets of threads or yarns to form a cloth.
Furthermore, in this project, there is a provision for loom by the researcher to the textile unit of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts to enhance easy access to looms for the students of the section for their assignments and other personal works that will help improve the students academically and also in acquisition of skill.
Statement of the Problem

Weaving is a very major aspect of textile. In times past till date, insufficient facilities have been a major problem for students of the textile unit of the section of the Department. Although students have always scrambled to execute assignments given to them, they encounter much stress in doing that as such; students of the department often encounter delays in turning in their assignment as at when due. Also it makes students to rush-up their work so as to handover the loom to the next person on the queue and these may cause them to do sub-standard works.
Furthermore, in the market today, meeting the need of a prospective buyer has been cumbersome talking about choice colours, motif and design etcetera. Consequent to the above reasons, these brought about the purpose of this project.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this project is providing a two-shaft table loom to the Department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Benin for the production of woven fabrics.
The project is aimed a adding a new Two – shaft table loom to the available ones in the Department of Fine And Applied Arts University of Benin for the students to work with in order to reduce the stress inadequate loom for both students and the lecturers.
The specific objectives are to:

i. Provide a two-shaft table loom.

ii. Produce woven fabrics of chosen colours using the loom.

iii. Adapt the woven fabrics for the creation of contemporary male apparels.

Methodology

This research project made use of studio exploration method for the stage by stage processes that went on.
Scope of the Study

The scope of this project is to use woven fabrics gotten from the provided loom to create contemporary male apparels.

Significance of the Study

This project is significant because it is aimed at solving the problem of the textile students of this Department in the area of woven and constructed textiles. It is also significant because it has reduced the stress on the path of the students and even the lecturers during weaving activities.
The project is also significant because it would help to improve the performances of students in respect to their class works and weaving assignments.
The research is also significant because the loom provided has added to the facilities available in the studio and its usage has impacted on me some entrepreneurial skills for self-reliance.
