Urban areas worldwide are facing escalating waste generation challenges, resulting in environmental degradation, public health concerns, and increased municipal waste management costs. Despite the potential of community engagement in sustainable waste management, many urban recycling initiatives lack systematic design, effective implementation, and comprehensive evaluation frameworks to measure their impact. This study aims to develop, implement, and critically evaluate a community-based waste recycling program in an urban context, with the overarching goal of improving waste segregation practices, increasing recycling rates, and fostering environmental stewardship among residents. The specific objectives include identifying community perceptions and barriers to recycling, designing a participatory recycling intervention rooted in behavior change theories, and assessing the program’s effectiveness through empirical analysis. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach anchored in a pragmatic paradigm. Quantitative data were collected from a sample of 400 households selected through stratified random sampling within the urban locality, alongside qualitative insights gathered via focus group discussions and key informant interviews with stakeholders including local government officials, community leaders, and waste management operators.
