Thesis Abstract

Urban green spaces (UGS) serve as vital elements in promoting sustainable city development by enhancing ecological stability, social well-being, and urban resilience. However, disparities in management practices across different municipalities pose significant challenges to optimizing these benefits, often resulting in inconsistent ecological outcomes, limited community engagement, and inefficiencies in resource allocation. This study addresses the critical need to compare urban green space management approaches to identify best practices and inform policy formulations that foster sustainable urban ecosystems. The primary aim is to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of green space management strategies in two metropolitan cities renowned for their urban greening initiatives—City A and City B—with specific objectives to evaluate institutional frameworks, stakeholder participation, funding mechanisms, maintenance practices, and policy effectiveness. The study adopts a mixed-methods research design, integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches to garner a holistic understanding of management paradigms. The population comprises key urban green space managers, municipal officials, community leaders, and residents within the selected cities. A purposive sampling technique is employed to select 30 key informants in each city, complemented by a stratified random sampling of 200 residents per city to obtain representative survey data. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interview guides, structured questionnaires, and direct observation checklists. The validity and reliability of the survey instruments are established through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha analyses, with a coefficient threshold of 0.8, indicating high internal consistency. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVA to identify significant differences in management practices and community satisfaction levels across the two cities. Qualitative data gleaned from interviews and observations are subjected to thematic analysis, following Braun and Clarke’s methodology, to elucidate underlying contextual factors influencing management effectiveness. Additionally, the study applies the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework and Systems Theory to interpret the institutional arrangements and systemic interactions underpinning green space management. Expected findings include statistically significant differences in institutional capacity, stakeholder engagement, and funding sources, with City A exhibiting more innovative and participatory practices, and City B demonstrating bureaucratic inefficiencies. It is anticipated that community involvement positively correlates with Green Space Quality Index scores, underscoring the importance of participatory governance. The study also expects to reveal systemic barriers such as insufficient funding, fragmented institutional responsibilities, and lack of policy enforcement that hinder optimal green space management, thereby providing actionable insights into best practices and pitfalls. This research makes a substantial contribution to the field of environmental management by providing an empirically grounded comparative framework for green space governance, integrating social-ecological systems perspectives, and advancing understanding of contextual factors influencing sustainability outcomes. It extends theoretical discourse by empirically testing the applicability of institutional and systems theories within urban greening contexts. Practically, the findings equip policymakers, urban planners, and community stakeholders with evidence-based guidelines for designing, implementing, and evaluating green space initiatives conducive to sustainable urban growth. The study concludes that effective urban green space management hinges on integrated institutional arrangements that foster participatory governance, ensure adequate funding, and promote adaptive management practices. Recommendations include developing comprehensive policy frameworks that institutionalize stakeholder participation, creating sustainable funding models, and fostering inter-agency collaboration. Future research should explore longitudinal assessments of management interventions and incorporate emerging technologies such as GIS and remote sensing for real-time monitoring of green space sustainability. Overall, the study emphasizes that sustainable urban development requires holistic, adaptive, and participatory green space management strategies tailored to diverse urban contexts.
