Abstract
Climate change poses a significant threat to coastal communities worldwide, leading to various environmental, social, and economic challenges. In response to these challenges, adaptation strategies have been developed and implemented to mitigate the impacts of climate change in coastal areas. This thesis aims to assess the effectiveness of climate change adaptation strategies in coastal communities, focusing on their implementation, outcomes, and limitations. The study begins by providing an overview of the background of the research, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of coastal communities to climate change impacts. The problem statement underscores the urgency of addressing climate change adaptation in these areas, given the potential risks and consequences associated with sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and coastal erosion. The objectives of the study are outlined to evaluate the effectiveness of existing adaptation strategies, identify key challenges and limitations, and propose recommendations for enhancing adaptation efforts in coastal communities. A comprehensive literature review is conducted in Chapter Two, examining past studies, reports, and projects related to climate change adaptation in coastal areas. The review explores various adaptation strategies, such as coastal protection measures, community-based initiatives, and policy frameworks, to understand their effectiveness and applicability in different contexts. Key findings from the literature review inform the research methodology, guiding the selection of research methods and data collection techniques for this study.
