The rapid urbanization and population growth in cities have resulted in an increase in waste generation, posing significant challenges to environmental sustainability and public health. Effective waste management strategies are crucial to mitigating these challenges and promoting sustainable urban development. This thesis focuses on the assessment of sustainable waste management strategies in urban areas, with the aim of identifying best practices and opportunities for improvement. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. The study aims to address the pressing need for sustainable waste management solutions in urban areas to reduce environmental impacts and enhance overall quality of life. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review on sustainable waste management strategies in urban areas. The review covers ten key areas, including waste generation trends, collection and transportation methods, recycling and composting initiatives, waste-to-energy technologies, policy frameworks, public awareness and participation, economic incentives, regulatory mechanisms, and best practices from global case studies. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations.
