The increasing influx of tourists to Monterey Bay has amplified the challenges associated with sustainable waste management, posing significant environmental, social, and economic risks to the coastal community. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management practices within the coastal tourism sector of Monterey Bay, with specific objectives to identify current waste management strategies employed by local stakeholders, assess compliance with environmentally sustainable guidelines, analyze community and operator perceptions, and develop recommendations for enhancing sustainability. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture comprehensive insights into waste management practices. The population includes 250 tourism business operators, government officials, and community residents, with a stratified random sampling technique used to select 150 respondents for survey administration and 20 key informants for in-depth interviews. The main conclusion emphasizes that sustainable waste management in Monterey Bay’s coastal tourism sector can be substantially improved through integrated stakeholder collaboration, enhanced public awareness campaigns, and policy reforms tailored to local contexts. Recommendations include implementing continuous environmental education programs, incentivizing eco-friendly practices through certification schemes, establishing robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and encouraging community participation in waste reduction initiatives. Lastly, the study advocates for longitudinal research to monitor the impacts of these interventions over time, suggesting further exploration of technological innovations and cross-sector partnerships to advance sustainability goals in coastal tourism environments.
