Assessing Sustainable Waste Management Practices in the Coastal Tourism Community of Monterey Bay

Thesis Abstract

The increasing influx of tourists to Monterey Bay has amplified the challenges associated with sustainable waste management, posing significant environmental, social, and economic risks to the coastal community. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management practices within the coastal tourism sector of Monterey Bay, with specific objectives to identify current waste management strategies employed by local stakeholders, assess compliance with environmentally sustainable guidelines, analyze community and operator perceptions, and develop recommendations for enhancing sustainability. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture comprehensive insights into waste management practices. The population includes 250 tourism business operators, government officials, and community residents, with a stratified random sampling technique used to select 150 respondents for survey administration and 20 key informants for in-depth interviews. Data collection instruments comprise structured questionnaires validated through Cronbach’s alpha (reliability score > 0.8), observation checklists, and interview guides, with triangulation ensuring data validity. Quantitative data will be analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS Version 26 to identify predictors of sustainable waste practices, while qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis using NVivo to interpret stakeholder perceptions and contextual nuances. The study hypothesizes that active stakeholder participation, environmental awareness, and effective policy enforcement positively influence sustainable waste management practices. It also anticipates identifying gaps between policy and implementation, limited community engagement, and operational constraints as key factors impeding sustainability efforts. Findings are expected to reveal that while some tourism operators adopt environmentally friendly waste practices driven by regulatory compliance or eco-certification pressures, a significant proportion lack sufficient awareness or resources, resulting in ineffective waste segregation, recycling, and disposal. The analysis aims to demonstrate statistically significant relationships between stakeholder engagement and sustainable waste behaviors, providing empirical evidence to support targeted interventions. The theoretical underpinning of this study draws from the Theory of Planned Behavior and Situational Theory of Publics, which explain the influence of attitudes, perceived control, and environmental communication on waste management actions. The study’s contribution to knowledge lies in providing an empirically grounded assessment of practical sustainability challenges within a popular coastal tourism destination, highlighting how social and institutional factors influence waste management outcomes. It offers a comprehensive framework for policymakers and industry stakeholders to bolster community-based strategies, improve regulatory enforcement, and foster environmental stewardship among tourism operators and residents. The main conclusion emphasizes that sustainable waste management in Monterey Bay’s coastal tourism sector can be substantially improved through integrated stakeholder collaboration, enhanced public awareness campaigns, and policy reforms tailored to local contexts. Recommendations include implementing continuous environmental education programs, incentivizing eco-friendly practices through certification schemes, establishing robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and encouraging community participation in waste reduction initiatives. Lastly, the study advocates for longitudinal research to monitor the impacts of these interventions over time, suggesting further exploration of technological innovations and cross-sector partnerships to advance sustainability goals in coastal tourism environments.
