This thesis explores the significant role of folklore in shaping cultural identity within the context of modern literature. Through an interdisciplinary approach drawing from English and Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, and Folklore Studies, this research investigates how folklore manifests in modern literary works and contributes to the representation and negotiation of cultural identities. The study begins with an examination of the theoretical foundations of folklore and cultural identity, highlighting the interconnectedness of folklore with cultural heritage and identity formation. By analyzing a diverse range of literary texts across different genres and time periods, the research identifies recurring themes, motifs, and narrative strategies through which folklore is incorporated into modern literature to reflect and shape cultural identities. These literary representations of folklore not only preserve cultural traditions but also provide insights into the complexities and nuances of cultural identity in a rapidly changing world. Furthermore, the thesis delves into the ways in which folklore functions as a site of cultural memory and resistance, challenging dominant narratives and offering alternative perspectives on cultural identity.
