This thesis explores the representation of gender roles in contemporary African literature, focusing on how authors depict and challenge traditional gender norms and expectations. The study examines a diverse range of literary works from various African countries, analyzing the ways in which male and female characters are portrayed and how these representations reflect broader societal attitudes towards gender. Through a combination of close textual analysis and theoretical frameworks from gender studies and postcolonial theory, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics of gender in African literature. The introduction sets the stage by discussing the background of the study, highlighting the significance of examining gender roles in African literature and outlining the research objectives. The problem statement underscores the need to critically engage with how gender is constructed and represented in literary texts, particularly in a postcolonial context where traditional and modern influences intersect.
