Mental health remains a critical issue that affects individuals across the globe, and literature has long been used as a medium to explore and portray the complexities of mental health. This thesis examines the portrayal of mental health issues in contemporary African literature, focusing on how African writers depict various aspects of mental health, including stigma, treatment, and the impact of societal norms and cultural beliefs. The study delves into a range of literary works from different African authors, analyzing the representation of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and psychosis. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the research, highlighting the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, and the structure of the thesis. Chapter two offers a comprehensive literature review that examines existing scholarship on mental health representation in African literature, identifying key themes, trends, and gaps in the field. Drawing on a variety of critical perspectives and theoretical frameworks, this chapter sets the stage for the subsequent analysis. Chapter three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, detailing the approach to data collection, analysis, and interpretation. The methodology section includes discussions on the selection of literary works, data extraction techniques, and the theoretical framework guiding the analysis.
