This thesis examines the portrayal of gender roles in contemporary African literature, aiming to shed light on how African writers depict and challenge traditional gender norms and expectations in their works. The study delves into a diverse range of literary texts from various African countries, analyzing the representations of male and female characters, their roles, and how they navigate societal expectations and constraints. Through a close reading of selected novels, short stories, and poems, the research explores the complexities and nuances of gender dynamics in African societies, highlighting the intersections of gender with race, class, and other social factors. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The chapter sets the stage for the subsequent analysis by outlining the context and rationale for the investigation into gender roles in African literature.
