Thesis Abstract
This study investigates the influence of social media on contemporary young adult literary themes by examining how online platforms shape narrative content, character development, and genre trends within young adult literature. The rapid expansion of social media has transformed communication and cultural expression, prompting a need to understand its impact on literary creation and themes targeting young adult audiences. This research aims to analyze the extent to which social media influences thematic trends in young adult literature, with specific objectives to identify prevalent online-driven themes, assess shifts in narrative strategies, and evaluate the reception of social media-influenced literature among young adults. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative content analysis of a selected sample of 150 recent young adult novels published in the last five years with qualitative thematic analysis of 30 interviews conducted with authors, publishers, and young adult readers. The selected novels are sourced from major publishing houses and independent publishers, with sampling achieved through stratified random sampling to ensure representation across genres and publishers. Data collection instruments include a structured coding schema for content analysis, semi-structured interview guides, and survey questionnaires distributed to a broader readership of 200 young adults. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to identify correlations between social media trends and thematic elements in literature. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis using NVivo software, guided by theoretical frameworks such as Uses and Gratifications Theory and Bicultural Identity Theory, to explore how social media shapes cultural and individual identity expressions within narratives. Expected findings suggest a significant correlation between the themes emerging in contemporary young adult literature—such as digital identity, online harassment, social activism, and virtual community building—and social media trends. The study anticipates revealing that social media platforms influence not only thematic content but also narrative styles, disseminating narratives that resonate with young adults’ online experiences. It is expected that authors increasingly incorporate social media lexicon, memes, and user-generated content to enhance relevance and engagement. Additionally, findings may indicate that young adult readership communities actively participate in shaping these themes through online peer interactions, fostering a reciprocal influence between social media and literature. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing an empirical analysis of the intersection between social media and young adult literary themes, offering a nuanced understanding of how digital platforms redefine literary content and cultural narratives targeted at youth audiences. It advances literary studies by integrating insights from media studies and digital culture, highlighting the transformative impact of social media on literary production and consumption. The main conclusion asserts that social media is a driving force behind evolving themes in young adult literature, with implications for authors, publishers, educators, and critics. The study recommends that literary creators harness social media insights intentionally to develop more relevant content, while educators incorporate social media literacy into curriculum designs to enhance critical engagement among young readers. Future research should explore longitudinal trends to assess evolving thematic patterns over time and extend analysis to diverse cultural contexts to better understand global variations in social media’s influence on young adult literature.
Thesis Overview
This research explores how social media platforms influence the themes and topics found in contemporary young adult literature. In recent years, social media has become a dominant part of young people's lives, shaping their perceptions, communication styles, and cultural identities. This study aims to understand how this digital interaction affects the stories, characters, and issues that writers choose to explore in young adult novels and other literary works. The importance of this research lies in its potential to reveal how modern technology impacts the themes of identity, relationships, mental health, diversity, and social justice in young adult literature, which are crucial for understanding the cultural climate of today’s youth.
The study addresses a gap in existing literature by focusing specifically on the direct relationship between social media content and literary themes, an area that has yet to be comprehensively examined. To conduct the research, the researcher will first identify a sample of recent young adult novels published in the last five years, selecting approximately 50 titles through purposive sampling. Data collection will involve analyzing the content of these texts using thematic analysis, a qualitative method that identifies recurring themes, ideas, and motifs related to social media influences.
Additionally, the researcher will gather data from social media platforms themselves—such as Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram—by collecting posts and discussions relevant to young adult issues. This will help establish a comparison between online discourses and literary themes. The analysis will involve coding and examining the content to identify correlations or influences, possibly using content analysis techniques.
The study’s contribution will be in shedding light on the dynamic relationship between digital culture and literature, providing insights for writers, educators, and librarians. The expected outcome is that social media significantly shapes contemporary literary themes, encouraging more authors and scholars to consider digital influences in their work. Overall, the research aims to deepen understanding of how technology continues to redefine cultural expression within young adult literature.
