Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The study of the economics of cooperative business enterprises is crucial for individuals pursuing a qualification in Co-operative Economic and Management at the OND level. Co-operatives play a significant role in various economies worldwide, contributing to sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and community empowerment. Understanding the economic principles that govern cooperative enterprises is essential for effectively managing and operating these organizations. By delving into the economics of cooperative business enterprises, students gain insights into the unique organizational structure, decision-making processes, and market dynamics that distinguish co-operatives from other forms of businesses. This knowledge equips future co-operative managers with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of running a successful cooperative enterprise. Studying the economics of co-operative business enterprises as part of the curriculum for an OND in Co-operative Economic and Management allows students to grasp fundamental economic concepts such as supply and demand, pricing strategies, cost-benefit analysis, and market competition within the context of co-operatives. This understanding enables students to make informed decisions when managing resources, setting prices, and engaging in market activities to ensure the sustainability and growth of their co-operative organizations. Moreover, a solid foundation in the economics of cooperative business enterprises provides students with the analytical tools to assess the financial performance, identify opportunities for growth, and mitigate risks within the cooperative sector. By applying economic principles to real-world cooperative scenarios, students develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities that are essential for effective management and decision-making in co-operative enterprises. Furthermore, studying the economics of co-operative business enterprises enhances students' awareness of the cooperative principles and values that underpin the cooperative movement. By recognizing the social and economic benefits of cooperative businesses, students are better equipped to promote and advocate for the cooperative model as a sustainable and inclusive form of enterprise. In conclusion, the study of the economics of cooperative business enterprises is a vital component of the curriculum for an OND in Co-operative Economic and Management. By integrating economic principles with cooperative practices, students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the cooperative sector, contribute to economic development, and foster a culture of cooperation and solidarity within their communities.

The Friendly Societies Act registered the society on October, 28th 1844.

This co-operative society originated from discontent with the adulteration of goods, false weights and measures and high prices prevailing on retail distribution among workers living on or near subsistence level owing to their bargaining power, living on or near subsistence level (Bob lgwe 1993:2) owing to their weak bargaining power in the labour market. The consumer co “operative movement on the true sense was the off-spring of a marriage between the wage camers need of an immediate rise in their standard of living and the aspiration towards a better social order based on the teachings of Robert Owen, Dr Willian king and other social philosophers and pioneers of 18th and 19th century England.

This society started with just twenty eight workers who set out themselves to conquer the world by faith and sheer determination. Much work which led to the success of the first co-operative in Rochale was done by these committed members who believed on mutual help. There is general laxity amongst members who believe that the co-operative business is no business. Since profits is not shared and non-members enjoy equal benefits with members and they stand to lose nothing in the members business running at a loss while the members bear the risks alone.

When then are the causes of this non-challant attitude of members and non-members towards the co-operative society and what are the importance of the business to the society?
