Thesis Abstract

Access to microfinance services has become a pivotal strategy in combating poverty and fostering sustainable livelihoods among low-income households. Despite widespread advocacy and numerous program implementations across developing regions, the empirical evidence regarding the extent to which microfinance access directly influences household income levels and poverty reduction remains mixed and context-dependent. This study aims to systematically evaluate the impact of microfinance access on household income and poverty alleviation, with a specific focus on rural communities in the Southern Province. The primary objectives are to quantify income changes attributable to microfinance participation, analyze the reduction in poverty levels, and identify the key socio-economic factors mediating these relationships. The research adopts a quantitative, field-based descriptive survey design within a cross-sectional framework. The targeted population comprises 3,000 households registered with microfinance institutions operating in the region. Utilizing a stratified random sampling technique, a sample size of 300 households was determined based on Cochran's formula to ensure statistical representativeness. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires designed to capture demographic information, income sources, microfinance usage patterns, and socio-economic indicators, alongside focus group discussions to triangulate quantitative data. The instruments' validity was assessed through pilot testing with 30 households outside the sampling frame, while reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.75. The collected data is analyzed through descriptive statistics for demographic profiling, followed by inferential statistical techniques, specifically multiple linear regression analysis, to examine the relationship between microfinance access and household income. Additionally, poverty reduction is assessed via the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) indices, and hypothesis testing involves ANOVA to evaluate differences across demographic groups. Theoretical underpinnings are anchored in the Poverty Reduction Theory and the Financial Theory of Microenterprise Growth, which inform the analytical framework and interpretation of findings. It is anticipated that the results will demonstrate a significant positive correlation between microfinance access and increased household income, corroborating prior theoretical assertions on financial inclusion’s role in economic empowerment. The study expects to reveal that households with regular microfinance access exhibit lower poverty indices and enhanced wellbeing indicators compared to non-participants, with factors such as education level, household size, and loan utilization strategies moderating these effects. Furthermore, the findings aim to delineate the types of microfinance services most conducive to income growth and poverty alleviation within the specific regional context. This research makes a substantive contribution to the existing body of knowledge by providing rigorous empirical evidence on the tangible economic benefits of microfinance in a rural setting, thereby contributing to debates on financial inclusion policies. It advances understanding of the mechanisms through which microfinance influences income dynamics and poverty reduction, addressing gaps noted in prior studies that often lack contextual specificity or employ limited analytical techniques. The main conclusions suggest that microfinance significantly enhances household income and reduces poverty levels when appropriately tailored and accessible. Based on the findings, the study recommends that policymakers strengthen microfinance outreach in underserved rural areas, improve the relevance and flexibility of microcredit products, and incorporate complementary measures such as financial literacy and entrepreneurship training. Future research avenues include longitudinal studies to assess long-term impacts and qualitative investigations into household experiences with microfinance, to deepen insights into behavioral and socio-cultural factors influencing program effectiveness. Overall, this study underscores the critical role of targeted microfinance interventions as a tool for sustainable development and poverty alleviation in rural economies.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how gaining access to microfinance services affects household income levels and the ability to escape or reduce poverty. Microfinance involves providing small loans, savings accounts, and other financial services to people who do not have access to traditional banking, often in low-income communities. The study aims to understand whether microfinance actually helps households improve their income, invest in productive activities, and reduce their vulnerability to poverty. This topic is important because while microfinance is widely promoted as a tool for poverty alleviation, there is still conflicting evidence on its actual effectiveness, especially in specific local contexts. The study aims to fill gaps in existing knowledge by analyzing how microfinance impacts different household groups and identifying factors that influence success or failure. It will examine whether microfinance borrowers see significant income increases and poverty reduction compared to non-borrowers in the same community. The research process will involve selecting a sample of 300 households from a community with active microfinance institutions. Data collection will be carried out through structured questionnaires administered via face-to-face interviews, focusing on household financial status, income sources, borrowing history, and poverty indicators. The researcher will also gather secondary data from microfinance institutions for analysis. The data will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as regression analysis to determine the relationship between microfinance access and income changes, and to identify factors influencing positive outcomes. The study hopes to contribute new evidence on the effectiveness of microfinance as a poverty reduction tool, providing insights for policymakers, microfinance providers, and development agencies. It is expected that households with greater access to microfinance will show notable improvements in income and reductions in poverty levels. Based on findings, the study will recommend ways to improve microfinance programs and suggest areas for further research to deepen understanding of how financial services can better serve poor households.
