Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital platforms has transformed retail landscapes in Lagos, yet small-scale retailers face divergent impacts in terms of sales, cost structures, and competitive positioning. This study investigates how digital platforms influence the performance, marketing strategies, and resilience of small retailers operating in Lagos markets, with a focus on how platform-mediated trade alters accessibility to customers, pricing dynamics, and informal credit mechanisms. The aim is to delineate the pathways through which digital platforms affect small retailers’ outcomes and to identify conditions under which these platforms contribute to inclusive growth. Specific objectives are (i) to assess the effect of platform usage on sales revenue and profit margins; (ii) to examine changes in customer reach, price setting, and promotional activities; (iii) to evaluate impacts on operational costs, including logistics and digital compliance; (iv) to explore shifts in bargaining power, access to financing, and credit terms; and (v) to identify barriers to adoption and strategies that enhance platform benefits for micro-entrepreneurs. The study adopts a mixed-methods research design anchored in resource-based and diffusion of innovations theories, with portmanteau of the UTAUT model to interpret adoption determinants. The population comprises registered and non-registered small retailers operating in major Lagos markets (e.g., Mile 12, Oshodi, and Balogun) with at least one year of platform exposure. A stratified random sample of 420 retailers will be drawn, ensuring representation across product categories (groceries, apparel, electronics, and street foods) and business sizes. Quantitative data will be gathered via a structured questionnaire measuring platform usage intensity, sales performance, cost structures, consumer reach, and financing access. Qualitative insights will be obtained from 40 in-depth interviews with shop owners, platform coordinators, and microfinance agents, complemented by four focus group discussions with retailers segmented by market and tenure. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analyses will be employed to test hypotheses regarding the relationship between platform engagement and performance outcomes. A logistic regression model will identify determinants of platform adoption, while a difference-in-differences approach will estimate causal effects where possible, leveraging temporal variations in platform policy changes. The qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic analysis to extract patterns on contextual constraints, strategic responses, and perceived risks, ensuring triangulation with quantitative results. Robustness checks will include instrumental variable approaches to address endogeneity and sensitivity analyses across market clusters. Expected findings anticipate that higher platform engagement correlates with positive revenue growth and broader customer access, albeit accompanied by elevated logistics costs and compliance requirements. The study expects heterogeneity in effects by product category and retailer size, with apparel and electronics vendors benefiting more from targeted promotions and centralized payment flows, while food vendors may face stricter regulatory and perishability constraints. It is anticipated that access to digital credit and improved cash flow visibility mediated by platforms will modestly enhance working capital, though high platform fees and transaction costs may offset gains for the smallest retailers. Barriers such as digital illiteracy, unreliable internet connectivity, and mistrust in platform terms are expected to dampen adoption among the neediest retailers. Contributions to knowledge include a nuanced, context-specific understanding of how digital platforms reshape micro-retail ecosystems in a rapidly urbanizing African megacity, an empirical decomposition of performance channels (market access, pricing, and costs), and policy-relevant insights on inclusive digital finance, capacity-building interventions, and platform governance mechanisms that can enhance small retailer resilience. The study concludes that digital platforms offer substantial potential for productivity and market expansion for Lagos’ small retailers when combined with targeted training, affordable logistics, and transparent fee structures. Policy recommendations emphasize collaboration among platform operators, financial institutions, and market associations to design low-cost onboarding, credit access programs, and digital literacy initiatives, while retreating on equitable fee regimes and user protections to sustain long-term inclusion.

Thesis Overview

The research investigates how digital platforms (such as e-commerce marketplaces, social media shops, and mobile payment apps) affect small-scale retailers operating in Lagos markets. It explores both opportunities (increased customer reach, reduced transaction costs, and improved inventory management) and challenges (price competition, platform fees, and dependence on platform policies). This topic matters because Lagos markets form a vital portion of the local economy and livelihoods, and digital platforms are rapidly reshaping how small retailers attract customers and compete with larger players. The problem or knowledge gap centers on understanding the real-world implications of platform participation for small retailers in a high-urban-density African city. While global studies exist, there is limited, context-specific evidence on Lagos’s informal and semi-formal retail sectors, including how platform use influences sales, profit margins, customer loyalty, and resilience to shocks such as internet outages or policy shifts. The study aims to generate practical insights for retailers, platform providers, and policymakers. Research approach and steps: - Design: a mixed-methods case study combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to capture breadth and depth. - Population and sample: small retailers operating in major Lagos markets (e.g., Balogun, Textile, and Computer Village) with at least six months of platform exposure; target sample of 300 survey respondents and 30 in-depth interviews. - Data collection instruments: structured questionnaires measuring platform usage, sales performance, costs, and satisfaction; semi-structured interview guides exploring experiences, strategies, and perceived risks. - Validity and reliability: pilot testing of instruments, Cronbach’s alpha checks for scales, and triangulation between survey results and interview findings. - Data analysis: quantitative data analyzed using regression analysis to identify factors predicting sales and profitability; qualitative data analyzed using thematic analysis to extract recurring patterns and insights; integration of results in a convergent mixed-methods framework. - Ethical considerations: informed consent, confidentiality, and data security. Expected contribution and outcomes: - Clarifies the direct and indirect financial and operational impacts of digital platforms on Lagos small retailers. - Identifies best practices for platform engagement and risk mitigation, and informs policy on fair fees and data rights. - Provides a context-rich model of how urban Nigerian retailers adapt to digital platforms, with actionable recommendations for retailers, platform operators, and regulators. The study anticipates that platform adoption will be associated with higher outreach and revenue for some retailers, but may introduce costs and dependency that require strategic management. Recommendations will emphasize selective platform participation, negotiation of terms, and diversification of sales channels to build resilience.
