Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital payment systems in urban retail environments has transformed transactional practices, yet limited empirical evidence exists on the specific impacts on small retailers. This study aims to assess the extent to which digital payment adoption influences the operational performance, customer base, and revenue streams of small retail businesses in metropolitan areas. The research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the benefits, challenges, and strategic implications associated with digital payment integration for small-scale retailers. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovations Theory, the study investigates not only the adoption rates but also the factors influencing acceptance and sustained usage of digital payment platforms among small retailers. Employing a descriptive cross-sectional research design, the study sampled 350 small retail shop owners in New City’s central business district, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across various retail sectors. Data were collected via structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with the questionnaires designed to measure variables such as perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, customer transaction volume, and revenue changes. To ensure validity and reliability, instruments were pre-tested on a sample of 50 retailers, achieving a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.87. Quantitative data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of digital payment adoption and its impact on business performance, while thematic analysis was employed to interpret qualitative interview data, uncovering contextual factors influencing adoption. Preliminary findings are anticipated to reveal a significant positive correlation between digital payment adoption and small retailers’ operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sales volume. Key drivers of adoption are expected to include perceived ease of use, competitive pressure, and customer demand, whereas barriers may encompass technological costs, security concerns, and lack of digital literacy. The analysis is projected to demonstrate that retailers who adopt digital payments experience measurable improvements in revenue (average increase of 15-20%) and customer retention compared to non-adopters. Furthermore, the study expects to identify moderating factors such as business size and retail sector that influence the strength of these relationships. This research makes a notable contribution to the existing literature by providing context-specific insights into how digital payment systems influence small retail businesses in an urban African setting, filling a gap in empirical studies predominantly centered on developed economies. The findings will inform policymakers, financial service providers, and small business associations about effective strategies to promote digital payment adoption, thereby supporting financial inclusion and business growth at the grassroots level. The study also extends theoretical understanding by testing the applicability of TAM and Diffusion of Innovations in the context of emerging digital economies. The principal conclusion indicates that digital payment systems are integral to enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of small retail businesses in urban environments, contingent on addressing technological, educational, and security barriers. Based on these findings, the study recommends targeted capacity-building initiatives, affordable digital payment infrastructure, and robust security protocols to facilitate widespread adoption among small retailers. Future research avenues include longitudinal studies to examine the long-term effects of digital payment integration and comparative analyses across different urban centers. Overall, the research underscores the critical role of digital financial technology in empowering small-scale retail enterprises and fostering economic resilience in urban settings.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how small retail businesses in urban areas are affected by the adoption of digital payment methods, such as mobile money, online banking, and card payments. With the rise of digital technology, many small retailers have started using these new payment options, but there is limited information about how this change impacts their sales, customer preferences, costs, and overall business performance. The study aims to fill this gap by evaluating both the benefits and challenges that digital payments bring to these small businesses. The research will examine the motivations for adopting digital payments, the effects on daily transactions, and possible changes in customer behavior. It will also explore how digital payment systems influence the financial practices and growth potential of small retailers. This information is valuable because it can guide policymakers and business owners on how to better support small retailers in embracing digital solutions, ultimately contributing to financial inclusion and economic development. The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on digital payments and small retail economics. Then, a quantitative research design will be employed, involving the collection of primary data from a sample of 200 small retailers in a specified city. Data will be gathered through structured questionnaires and, where appropriate, supplemented with interviews for deeper insights. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics to understand general patterns and regression analysis to examine the relationship between digital payment adoption and business performance. The study will contribute new knowledge on the real-world impacts of digital payments at the small business level, highlighting factors that influence successful adoption and areas needing support. It is expected that the findings will show increased sales, improved financial management, and greater customer satisfaction among retailers who adopt digital payments, although some challenges such as costs and system complexity may also emerge. Ultimately, the research aims to recommend strategies for enhancing digital payment integration in small retail businesses.
