Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project delves into the structural analysis of the Itsekiri noun phrase. The Itsekiri language is a Niger-Congo language spoken in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, specifically in the Warri area. The study aims to explore the intricate structure of noun phrases in Itsekiri, focusing on the various elements that make up these phrases and how they are combined to convey meaning. The research adopts a descriptive approach, drawing on data collected from native speakers of Itsekiri, as well as existing linguistic literature on the language. The analysis of Itsekiri noun phrases reveals a complex system of modification and agreement within the noun phrase structure. Adjectives, numerals, and demonstratives are shown to precede the noun they modify, while possessors and relative clauses typically follow the noun. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of agreement markers in Itsekiri noun phrases. These markers play a crucial role in indicating the grammatical relationships between different elements within the phrase. The research also explores the presence of classifiers in Itsekiri noun phrases, which further contribute to the specificity and nuance of the noun phrase. Additionally, the research examines the role of noun classes in Itsekiri noun phrases. Nouns in Itsekiri are classified into different categories based on semantic features, and these classes impact the agreement patterns and the overall structure of the noun phrase. The study reveals the intricate system of noun classification in Itsekiri and its implications for the analysis of noun phrases. Overall, the structural analysis of Itsekiri noun phrases sheds light on the rich morphology and syntax of the language. By investigating the various components and rules governing the construction of noun phrases in Itsekiri, this research contributes to our understanding of the linguistic diversity and complexity of Niger-Congo languages. The findings of this study have implications for theoretical linguistics, typology, and language documentation, providing valuable insights into the structure of Itsekiri noun phrases and their role in communication within the community.

Noun phrase also known as nominal phrase (abbreviated as NP) is a type of phrase which has a noun or an indefinite pronoun as head word of its phrase. 1.2       The Itsekiri Language

The Itsekiri’s are located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in the South of Delta State. Itsekiri’s are majorly located in Warri and Sapele.

The Itsekiri language is a branch of the Yoruboid group of languages. Itsekiri is most closely related to the south eastern Yoruba dialects with which it shares close similarity.

Nevertheless, from a linguistic standpoint, Itsekiri is most closely related to both Yoruba and Igala and incorporates elements of both languages. It is also influenced by Edo (Bini), Portuguese and English language and has taken loan words from neighbouring Ijaw and Urhobo languages. However, its basic structure, grammar and vocabulary is essentially Yoruboid with its closest relatives being the south eastern family of Yoruba dialects (Ijeba Ilaje-Ikale Ondo, etc.).

Below is a diagrammatic representation of Itsekiri’s language family.
