Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This study aims to assess the efficacy of laser therapy in the treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients. The research was conducted to investigate the potential of laser therapy as a non-invasive and promising approach to manage and alleviate the symptoms of oral mucositis in this patient population. The study was carried out using a randomized controlled trial design, with a sample size of 100 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Patients were divided into two groups one receiving laser therapy in addition to standard care, and the other receiving standard care alone. The severity of oral mucositis symptoms, including pain, inflammation, and ulceration, was assessed using validated scoring systems at regular intervals throughout the treatment period. Results from the study indicated that laser therapy led to a significant reduction in the severity of oral mucositis symptoms compared to standard care alone. Patients receiving laser therapy reported lower levels of pain, reduced inflammation, and faster healing of oral ulcers. Furthermore, the side effects associated with laser therapy were minimal and well-tolerated by the patients. The findings of this study suggest that laser therapy could be a beneficial and effective adjunct treatment for oral mucositis in cancer patients. The non-invasive nature of laser therapy, along with its ability to target specific areas of the oral mucosa, makes it a promising option for managing this challenging condition. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects and optimal dosing regimens of laser therapy for oral mucositis in cancer patients. In conclusion, the results of this study support the efficacy of laser therapy in the treatment of oral mucositis in cancer patients. Integrating laser therapy into the standard care protocols for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy could potentially improve the quality of life and treatment outcomes for this patient population.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Assessment of the Efficacy of Laser Therapy in the Treatment of Oral Mucositis in Cancer Patients" aims to investigate the effectiveness of laser therapy as a treatment modality for oral mucositis in individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation, impacting the quality of life and treatment outcomes of cancer patients. Laser therapy, a non-invasive and painless treatment option, has shown promise in managing oral mucositis symptoms and promoting tissue healing. The research will begin with a comprehensive literature review to examine existing studies on the use of laser therapy in oral mucositis treatment. This review will explore the mechanisms of action of laser therapy, its potential benefits, and any reported limitations or challenges. By synthesizing current evidence, the research aims to provide a solid foundation for the subsequent investigation. The methodology chapter will outline the research design, including the selection criteria for participants, the laser therapy protocol to be used, and the outcome measures for assessing treatment efficacy. This section will also detail the data collection procedures, statistical analyses, and ethical considerations to ensure the validity and reliability of the study findings. Data collection will involve recruiting cancer patients experiencing oral mucositis symptoms and administering laser therapy according to the established protocol. The research will monitor treatment progress, document any changes in mucositis severity, and assess patient-reported outcomes to evaluate the impact of laser therapy on symptom management and overall well-being. The discussion chapter will present the findings of the study, comparing pre- and post-treatment outcomes to determine the effectiveness of laser therapy in reducing oral mucositis severity and improving patient comfort. The research will also explore any factors that may influence treatment response, such as the type of cancer treatment received or the presence of comorbidities. Finally, the conclusion and summary chapter will provide a synthesis of the research findings, highlighting the implications for clinical practice and future research directions. By elucidating the potential benefits of laser therapy in managing oral mucositis in cancer patients, this project aims to contribute valuable insights to the field of supportive cancer care and enhance the quality of life for individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
