Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police use of force incidents through a comparative analysis. The use of force by law enforcement officers has been a topic of intense scrutiny and debate, with concerns about accountability, transparency, and the protection of both civilians and police officers. In recent years, the adoption of BWCs by police departments has been hailed as a potential solution to these issues. However, the effectiveness of BWCs in reducing use of force incidents and improving police-civilian interactions remains a subject of ongoing research and discussion. This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by conducting a comparative analysis of police departments that have implemented BWC programs and those that have not. By examining data on use of force incidents, complaints against officers, and other relevant metrics, this research seeks to evaluate the impact of BWCs on police behavior and outcomes. The study will also explore the perceptions and experiences of police officers, civilians, and other stakeholders regarding the use of BWCs. The research methodology will involve a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis of existing data sets and qualitative interviews with police officers, community members, and policy experts. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of BWCs in reducing use of force incidents, improving accountability, and enhancing trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. Overall, this thesis seeks to advance our understanding of the role of BWCs in modern policing practices and contribute to evidence-based policy recommendations for police departments and policymakers. By shedding light on the potential benefits and challenges associated with BWCs, this research aims to inform future strategies for promoting transparency, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement.

Thesis Overview

The research project titled "The Impact of Body-Worn Cameras on Police Use of Force Incidents: A Comparative Analysis" aims to investigate the effectiveness of body-worn cameras (BWCs) in reducing incidents of police use of force. Quantitative analysis will involve the examination of statistical data on use of force incidents, while qualitative research will include interviews with police officers, community members, and relevant stakeholders to gather insights on the perceived impact of BWCs on policing practices. By combining these research approaches, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between BWCs and police use of force incidents. The findings of this research are expected to contribute valuable insights to the existing literature on police accountability and the use of technology in law enforcement.
