Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on police-community relations through a criminological lens. The use of BWCs by law enforcement agencies has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with the aim of enhancing transparency, accountability, and trust between police officers and the communities they serve. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how the implementation of BWCs influences various aspects of police-community relations and the implications for crime prevention and social order. The research methodology employed in this study includes a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A thorough literature review is conducted to explore existing research on BWCs, police-community relations, and criminological theories relevant to this study. The study also includes interviews with police officers, community members, and stakeholders to gather firsthand perspectives on the use of BWCs and their impact on police-community interactions. The findings of this study reveal that the use of BWCs can have both positive and negative effects on police-community relations. While BWCs can enhance accountability and transparency in police interactions, they also raise concerns about privacy, trust, and the potential for surveillance. The analysis of the data suggests that the effectiveness of BWCs in improving police-community relations is influenced by various factors, including organizational policies, community perceptions, and the legal framework governing their use. The implications of this study underscore the importance of considering the complex dynamics involved in the implementation of BWCs and the need for clear guidelines and training for law enforcement officers. By understanding the multifaceted impact of BWCs on police-community relations, policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders can work together to maximize the benefits of this technology while mitigating its potential drawbacks. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the existing body of literature on BWCs and police-community relations by providing a nuanced analysis of the implications of this technology from a criminological perspective. The insights gained from this study can inform future research, policy development, and practical strategies aimed at fostering positive police-community interactions and enhancing public safety. This project will adopt a criminological lens to examine the implications of body-worn cameras on various aspects of police-community relations. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, the research will explore the theoretical foundations and empirical evidence related to the use of body-worn cameras in policing, with a focus on their effects on officer behavior, citizen interactions, procedural justice, and community perceptions. The methodology of this study will involve a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of data from surveys or official police records with qualitative insights gathered through interviews or focus groups with police officers, community members, and other relevant stakeholders. By triangulating multiple sources of data, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics at play in the implementation and impact of body-worn cameras on police-community relations.
